Ph.D. Student for Design and Simulation of Microfluidic Systems (m/f/d, full time E13)
Call for Applications: Ph.D. Student for Simulation of Microfluidic Systems (m/f/d, full time E13) We are an active and lively research group which is passionate about science. We are working in an environment which may best be characterized by the passion to accomplish something new—complemented by teamwork and fostering personal relationships. From assistants, students, researchers, postdocs to professors; we are all working hand in hand, are highly committed, and engaged with our work. We know how to celebrate our successes, but also how to get through setbacks together! We are extending our research group at the Technical University of Munich (www.cda.cit.tum.de), and are seeking a motivated Ph.D. Student to join our team to work on the Design and Simulation of Microfluidic Systems! Our Research We currently develop methods and software tools that aid the design of microfluidic devices (also known as Labs-on-a-Chip). While these devices are mainly designed manually thus far, we investigate methods that eventually will automate crucial design steps. In addition, we are developing simulators (on various abstraction levels; using, e.g., Computational Fluid Dynamics) which enables us to validate designs of microfluidic devices even before the first prototype is fabricated. You will have opportunities to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, contribute to diverse fields such as biomedical devices, clean energy solutions, and machine learning, and present your work at leading international conferences and journals. For an overview of our previous work, please check out our web pages on software/design automation for microfluidics (www.cda.cit.tum.de/research/microfluidics). Your Profile In this role, you will conceptualize, develop and implement design and simulation methods for microfluidic devices. We are looking for a candidate with a strong academic background, with a Master’s or Diploma degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, Chemistry, Physics or a similar subject. You will need strong coding skills, and most importantly, you should be creative, passionate about research, driven by curiosity, and be able to think outside-of-the-box. A focus in bio-chemistry or medicine, and ideally interest (or even first lab experiences) in microfluidics is obviously an advantage. Join our Team While we are obviously interested in your CV and background (if applicable, please also add your list of publications, projects, cooperations, etc. as well as your GitHub profile), we are most importantly interested in what motivates you to join our team and to work on microfluidics. Let us know why you would be a great candidate! We are looking forward to hearing from you! Please send your application (in English or German) to Prof. Dr. Robert Wille (robert.wille@tum.de) until January 15th, 2025. Severely disabled applicants will be given preference if they are essentially of the same suitability and qualifications. The Technical University of Munich aims to increase the proportion of women, so applications from women are expressly welcomed. Note on data protection As part of your application, you transmit personal data. Please note our data protection information in accordance with Article 13 of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) on the collection and processing of personal data as part of your application (see https://portal.mytum.de/kompass/datenschutz/Bewerbung/). By submitting your application, you confirm that you have taken note of TUM's data protection information.

Master Thesis: Modelling of next-generation MEMS microphones for hearing aids
We are looking for students who like to work in an interdisciplinary team and intend to realize their master's thesis within our group at Professorship of Microsensors and Actuators embedded in the EU project Listen2Future. Topic Advances in material science have enabled the use of piezoelectric materials in MEMS microphones. In contrast to commonly used capacitive MEMS microphones, piezoelectric microphones require less energy and are, therefore, useful for mobile applications such as hearing aids. Another advantage of the piezoelectric microphone is the linear relationship between electrical voltage and force. This simplifies force-feedback control of the sensor and thus opens the possibility of increasing the sensor performance even more. Crucial for this is the design of the microphone membrane. Therefore, highly accurate models must be set up to simulate the microphone behavior. Within this Master Thesis, you will set up a shell model of the microphone membrane to obtain a complete 3D model. Currently, a 2D axisymmetric FEM model is available, which cannot cover the full 3D behavior. A shell model could simulate additional resonance modes and promising membrane designs for force-feedback control. Simulation is done in COMSOL Multiphysics, the gold standard software to simulate the coupling of different en-ergy domains. Work packages • Topic familiarization and literature survey • Familiarization with COMSOL Multiphysics • Setting up a shell model of the piezoelectric microphone membrane • Comparison with the existing 2D axisymmetric model • Investigation of new membrane designs for force-feedback control • Documentation and presentation of the results Requirements Background in one of the following fields: • Electrical Engineering • Mechanical Engineering • Physics • Materials Science • Related fields of study Timetable The thesis can be started immediately. Contact Til Friebe, M.Sc. Doctoral Candidate Phone: +49 89 28923129 Email: til.friebe@tum.de

HiWi for "Implementation of a Head Mounted Display (Augmented Reality) in the Rotorcraft Simulation Environment ROSIEX"
Hours: 10-20 per week (negotiable) Background: At the Chair for Rotorcraft and Vertical Flight the Rotorcraft Simulation Environment ROSIEX is used for research in different areas relating to the future of vertical flight. It is a state-of-the-art fixed base simulator which enables fast and comprehensive tests of systems and components as well as valuable insights towards their impact on the aircraft and its personnel. One of these components is a so-called Head/Helmet Mounted Display (HMD). It is used to display information and data within the field of view of the pilot. By using such HMDs there is less need for the pilot to look on the so-called head-down instrument panel. This can lead to a reduction in workload as well as an improved situational awareness. In previous studies a former HMD system has been evaluated at the chair. Due to advancements in technology, there are better devices available at the market nowadays. Hence, it has been decided to invest in a new HMD. The so-called HoloLens 2 has been bought and shall be implemented in the simulator now. For this, Unity in combination with C# programming shall be used. In the end a modular platform shall exist, which enables fast calibration of the system as well as easy usage and extendibility of the visual augmentation. Goal: Implementation of the Head Mounted Display “HoloLens 2” in the Rotorcraft Simulation Environment ROSIEX using Unity in Combination with C# (gRPC). A modular framework for further extension of the visual augmentation system shall be generated within this process. Skills: Good C# programming knowledge necessary, good Unity programming knowledge necessary, Augmented Reality knowledge is a plus Tools: C#, Unity Language: English, German is a plus Start: March/April 2024 Contact: Christian Eichhorn Research Group Augmented Reality (FAR) Email: christian.eichhorn@tum.de Bastian Bauer Institute for Rotorcraft and Vertical Flight Email: bastian.bauer@tum.de

Fundamental research and optimisation of novel plastics-to-plastic chemical recycling technology for upcoming start up
Join us in our exciting journey to revolutionise the plastics recycling world. We are developing the next generation of chemical plastics recycling technologies based on liquid phase low-temperature autooxidation. We (Alexandre Kremer and Dr. Andreas Wagner) are an impact driven founder-team based in the ChemSPACE TUM Venture Labs in the Chemistry Department. We have over 10 years of professional experience in sustainability and strong academic track record, particularly in the plastics and chemical industry. We are looking for an outstanding student to support us in scaling up our technology while exploring and optimising the underlying chemistry. Project context: Finding new feedstocks for the chemical industry constitutes a cornerstone of the net-zero transition by drastically reducing the sector’s dependence on fossil fuels. In parallel, ever-growing volumes of incinerated unrecyclable (plastic) waste are not compatible with Paris pledges and alternative waste treatment is crucially needed. We aim to develop the first end-to-end integrated technology platform for plastic-to-plastic chemical recycling. Objective of the project: The project will span over several areas based on time availability and student interest including: (1) study our breakthrough chemical recycling process and resulting chemical products formed from polymer resins and ‘hard-to-recycle’ real-life plastic waste samples (2) perform kinetic studies and optimize the technological pathway (e.g., pressure, temperature, catalyst concentration, solvent, time) to maximize carbon recovery (3) test different catalyst recovery and recycling technologies relevant at industrial scale. Key goals: • Mapping of chemical products formed and respective ratios for different plastic waste streams. • Determination of optimal reaction conditions for a selected waste stream. • Validate the use of a catalyst recovery method. Requirements for students: Prior experience in organic, inorganic or polymer chemistry with emphasis on catalysis. Strong interest in entrepreneurship and sustainability are a big plus. We are both driven by making a positive impact in our professional career and would love to work with like-minded students.
