Sensors and actuators in the fortiss Living Lab demonstrator are monitored and controlled by the SMG middleware. An “Ambulance” component monitors the health of all the software components of the demonstrator. If it does not receive heartbeats from one of the software components, it sets the running status of that component as false. However, the Ambulance component should also perform counter measures, e.g., by restarting the faulty components. For example, when the Analyzer component (responsible for finding correlations) in SMG middleware stops running, then Ambulance component should check all the components dependent on the Analyzer. As a counter measure, it should restart the Analyzer component and all the other components dependent on the Analyzer. The objective of this thesis is to develop a software fault handler for the SMG middleware by extending the existing Ambulance component. Goal of this thesis is to: • Create a concept for the Ambulance component for handling different types of faults occurring in software components in SMG. • Implement the algorithm in the fortiss Living Lab demonstrator. • Evaluate the approach by using an example to detect a fault in a component. The tasks for the thesis include: • Understanding the existing Living Lab demonstrator and the existing sensor and actuators. • Develop an approach to detect fault in software component and the counter measures (actions/notifications) necessary for handling the fault. • Create an example to describe the approach. • Implement the example in the fortiss Living Lab demonstrator. • Provide detailed documentation of the work done as part of the written thesis. Prerequisites: - Good knowledge of Java, OSGi. - Basic knowledge of maven, drools rule engine. - Self-driven and motivated to work independently.
