Student Assistant (HiWi, 20 hours/week)– Meta-learning for Drug Discovery

03.07.2026, Student assistants, internships, student research projects

Join our team as a student research assistant (HiWi) and work on cutting-edge machine learning for drug discovery. You will develop and evaluate meta-learning models for bioactivity prediction, collaborate with researchers at the intersection of AI and biomedicine, and have the opportunity to contribute to a scientific publication.

We are looking for a motivated student interested in a working student (HiWi) position focused on meta-learning for drug discovery, primarily for small molecules, with potential applications to proteins.

This is an approximately 1-year research project with an opportunity to contribute to a scientific publication. The project focuses on developing meta-learning methods for bioactivity prediction. You will work on curating bioactivity datasets, training and evaluating machine learning models, and screening prospective drug candidates, which will be validated by our experimental collaborators.

Your profile:
- Currently enrolled as a Master's student in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, or a related field
- Practical experience with training and evaluating machine learning models
- Familiarity with PyTorch

Nice to have:
- Experience with RDKit and bioactivity databases such as ChEMBL or BindingDB
- Knowledge of probabilistic machine learning

What we offer:
- Flexible working hours (ideally 20 h/week)
- Opportunity to contribute to a journal or conference publication
- Opportunity to work in a highly talented team of researchers and students in the lab of Prof. Ewa Szczurek
- Start date: as soon as possible

Location: Helmholtz Munich, Institute of AI for Health
