Master Thesis: Microrobots for ATP Sensing

The Microrobotic Bioengineering Lab (MRBL) is offering a Master’s thesis position on developing new sensing capability for soft microrobots. In this project, you will explore ways to incorporate a suitable ATP sensor into the material of the soft microrobot, enabling real-time metabolic rate sensing. You will also gain hands-on experience in high-throughput fabrication of soft microrobots and learn to test them in cell culture experiments.

AI-Driven Wind Energy Forecasting

Wind energy is characterized by variability and non- linear behavior, complicating grid management and energy planning. Accurately forecasting wind energy generation is essential for optimizing grid operations, reducing energy costs, and ensuring system reliability. This thesis will explore innovative approaches to predict the generated wind energy over a 24-hour horizon by leveraging physical models (such as turbine power curves) and data-driven machine-learning techniques.

CFD Simulation of an air or flue gas cleaning process by means of enzymatic katalysis

The aim of this research is to provide a catalytic formulation that generates enzymatically active surfaces for the detoxification of harmful halogenated alkanes. Toxic gases that cannot be captured by standard filtering technics such as fluorochlorohydrocarbons (CFCs) are converted into products that are harmless to the environment and health by means of enzymatic catalysis.

Multiphase CFD Simulation of different agitator geometries in bio- gas fermenters

A multiphase CFD Study of three different agitators in biogas plants has to be carried out. The two phases are a liquid, non-newtonian phase and a solid particle phase with different fractions of varying equivalent diameters. The transient simulation aims to analyze the particle distribution after a certain mixing time. Due to the high computing requirements the simulation will be carried out on the LRZ Linux cluster (HPC – High performance computing).

Geometric parameter study of different agitators in biogas fer- menters by CFD Simulation

A CFD Study of three different agitators in biogas plants has to be carried out. The effect of different installation angles on the mixed area and velocity distribution should be analyzed. Additionally various combinations of agitators in the fermenter should be analyzed aiming for the optimum setup. Due to the high computing requirements these calculations will be carried out on the LRZ Linux cluster (HPC – High performance computing)
