(BA/MA) Different Topics for Literature Review in the Field of Mixed Reality

Novel and relevant technologies are emerging in the field of Mixed Reality (MR). Examples are, Large Language Model-driven agents, or rendering techniques such as Gaussian Splatting. On top of that, security and cybersecurity topics are gaining in importance. In literature reviews, a new perspective on the usage of technologies, comparisons to established ones, and future use cases can lead to a better understanding how the role of MR shifts.

Three possible literature review topics are:
1) Immersion Enhancing Technologies: The usage of Embodied Agents in Virtual Reality, in comparison to established approaches, such as haptics or olfactory. How are effects on the concept of presence changed and measured? How are Embodied Agents being implemented and what future possibilities are available when AI further develops?
2) New Opportunities for Mixed Reality in the Field of Security and Cybersecurity: In today’s global environment new challenges and crisis emerge. So-called Immersive Virtual Environments (IVEs) are already frequently used to simulate complex scenarios and to help users train for challenging tasks, such as in the medical field. Where and for what scenarios has MR been used in the field of security and cybersecurity? Can MR help to further strengthen security?
3) Rendering in Mixed Reality in the Age of Gaussian Splatting: Recently, rendering authentic scenes became more efficient based on the introduction of Gaussian Splatting (and newer concepts based on it, such as Trilinear Point Splatting), replacing previous concepts such as Radiant Fields. How are such rendering concepts being used in MR? What opportunities are to be expected in the future?

Important points to consider:
• The literature review should be conducted in accordance with established approaches for scientific reviews, such as PRISMA. In addition, emphasize will be placed on visualizing categorical classifications through diagrams. At last, besides an overview of the “field”, the literature review should aim for an in-depth discussion of the content of the papers based on a topic-wise perspective and identify research gaps.
• Usage of AI to write the review is not wanted. If the results allow it, after finishing the thesis, we will provide support, to help publishing your work in a scientific conference or journal. For that to be viable, the text needs to be hand-written!
