Master’s Thesis: Evaluation of restored landscapes for GIZ-projects ProSoil and Soil Matters (incl. remote sensing)

17.08.2026, Abschlussarbeiten, Bachelor- und Masterarbeiten

Evaluating the success of different soil improving interventions in dryland ecosystems using socio-economic ground data and remote sensing.

A GIZ (German Agency for International Cooperation) project on soil health and rainwater management collected data from several semi-arid regions—including Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, Benin, Kenya, Tunisia, and Madagascar—before and after project interventions. These data can now be processed, combined with publicly available satellite and weather data, and analysed. For a thesis, it would be possible to focus on a single country or compare several countries.

Challenges
• Highly heterogeneous datasets and spatial structures, including differences in area size, shape, and land use
• Varying environmental conditions, although the study areas are predominantly semi-arid and arid
• Precise geolocation of the study areas is difficult in some cases

Objectives
• Data preparation and processing
• Assessment of the effects of the GIZ projects ProSoil and Soil Matters
• Contextualisation of the interventions

Requirements
• Basic understanding of tropical and subtropical climates and vegetation
• Experience with R, Python, and/or QGIS
• Interest in working with geospatial and environmental data

Start
Immediately. An introductory meeting can be arranged at any time.
