Master Thesis: Optimal System Design of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BELECTRIC)

With us, you will work on the development of a multi-market optimisation engine, integrate external market and PV forecasts, model battery storage and analyse regulatory scenarios. Sounds exciting? Then we look forward to receiving your application!

Your Tasks

Would you like to put your knowledge from your studies into practice and contribute to pioneering energy solutions? We are offering a mater's thesis in the field of system design!

  • Develop and validate a multi-market optimization engine (Day-Ahead planning, sub-hourly dispatch, value stacking)
  • Integrate external market and PV forecasts
  • Model battery SoC dynamics, efficiency, and degradation
  • Ensure feasibility under aFRR/FCR capacity and activation requirements
  • Run scenario analyses (tariffs, grid fees, regulatory changes)
  • Extend the framework to Commercial & Industrial (C&I) behind-the-meter storage, evaluating use cases such as peak shaving, self-consumption optimization and demand charge reduction

Your Profile

  • Currently enrolled in an engineering program
  • Must-Have: in-depth knowledge of optimization and control (pyomo, MILP, Gurobi)
  • Nice to have: experience with battery modelling and machine learning, as well as the German electricity markets
  • Knowledge of Python, Pandas, SQL
  • Very good written and spoken English; German and Spanish are a plus
  • Your skills: Communicative team player (m/f/d) with a high degree of flexibility and initiative
  • Willingness to travel: partially required
