Master Theses: Development of Potential-Controlled Affinity Membrane Chromatography & Digital Process Models

22.07.2025, Diplomarbeiten, Bachelor- und Masterarbeiten

Exciting master’s thesis opportunities at Bioseparation Engineering Chair (BioSE) in the field of antibody purification using potential-controlled membrane affinity chromatography (pcAMC). Topics include lab work, digital twin development, simulation, and analytics. Flexible, modern setup with weekly supervision. Start anytime, minimum 6 months.

Master’s Theses in Antibody Purification

– Development of Potential-Controlled Affinity Chromatography & Digital Process Models –

Therapeutic antibodies are among the highest-revenue biopharmaceuticals worldwide, with a global market volume exceeding 100 billion USD. Efficient, cost-effective, and gentle purification of antibodies is therefore a key research focus in industrial biotechnology.

As part of my doctoral research at the Chair of Bioseparation Engineering (TUM), I am developing novel separation techniques based on potential-controlled affinity membrane chromatography (pcAMC).

I am offering master’s thesis projects starting immediately (minimum duration: 6 months) – with individual supervision, high-end infrastructure, and diverse methodological approaches.

Possible Focus Areas

(The exact topic will be defined based on your interests and background.)

  • Experimental work: Affinity membrane chromatography, antibody purification, ÄKTA Pure 25, HPLC, DLS, SEC-MALS, ELISA
  • Digitalization: Development of a soft sensor or a digital twin for process control in chromatography
  • Simulation: Modeling of electrochemical processes and mass transport in membranes using COMSOL Multiphysics
  • TEA & LCA: Techno-economic analysis and environmental impact assessment for sustainability and scalability

Framework & Conditions

  • Location: TUM Campus Garching – Buildings: Munich Institute of Integrated Materials, Energy and Process Engineering (MEP) and Mechanical Engineering
  • Remote work: Partially possible by arrangement
  • Language: German or English
  • Start: Immediately
  • Duration: Minimum 6 months
  • Compensation: Not provided
  • Supervision: Weekly meetings and close support by me (PhD student)

Application

If you're interested, please send me a short email including the following:

  1. Your degree program and current semester
  2. Desired timeframe for your thesis
  3. Current transcript of records
  4. A short paragraph on what you particularly enjoy in your studies or lab work
  5. A short paragraph on which topic area you’d like to focus on
  6. A short paragraph about relevant personal experience (e.g. internships, student jobs, projects, exchange semesters, etc.)
