Master Thesis / IDP: Prototype development of GenAI-tool for reading support

09.05.2025, Diplomarbeiten, Bachelor- und Masterarbeiten

The goal of this project is to design, implement and test a prototype for an ITS (Intelligent Tutorial System) that helps students to learn how to read and strengthen this skill. The project focuses on the conceptualisation of the reading tool (modality of feedback, simple interactive UX design) as well as the first implementation (prototype development and testing).

Based on existing work (see the SARA project), the reading tool should comprise the following components:

  • Data Collection: Collect real-time eye-tracking data.
  • Data Analysis: Use ML-methods to identify individual difficulties during reading.
  • Reading Assistant: Design and implement an UI to provide real-time reading support e.g. using GenAI.
  • Prototype Testing: Conduct a small user study to test the usability and functionality of the prototype.
  • Optional: Develop a basic learner model.

We seek students interested in adaptive educational technologies, human-computer interaction, generative AI and cognitive processes of reading and learning. Participation in the project would require most (not necessarily all) of the following skills:

  • Experience with programming languages (e.g. python, C++) and, optional but beneficial, common image processing libraries (e.g. OpenCV)
  • Fundamental skills in handling, analysing and interpreting eye-tracking data (or other types of spatiotemporal data)
  • Basic knowledge of and/or interest in ML-methods for data analysis and computer vision
  • Basic knowledge of and/or interest in UX/UI design, testing, and implementation
  • Ability to work on tasks independently, complete them in a structured and precise way, as well as present and discuss results comprehensible
  • Interest in learning (more) about eye-tracking technologies and their application in educational technologies

If you are interested in working on this project, please contact us with your CV and current ToR.
