The Downsides of Feeling Lonely: How does Loneliness Influence People’s Sport and Health Behavior?

Eating behaviour and loneliness

09.10.2017, Abschlussarbeiten, Bachelor- und Masterarbeiten

An unhealthy life style can have many different reasons. One reason might be that people use this unhealthy behavior to overcome their loneliness. Loneliness has many negative consequences including that people’s need to belong is not fulfilled (see Baumeister & Leary, 1995). Studies have shown that elderly report decreases in their self-rated health and that loneliness is associated with longevity (e.g., Luo, Hawkley, Waite, & Cacioppo, 2012). Yet, it is not fully understood how loneliness can impact sport and health behavior. In a systematic literature review, students are expected to thoroughly identify and examine related literature in order to provide a complete picture of how loneliness might influence sport and health behavior.
