"Abu Dhabi - Munich Research Alliance":

The Petroleum Institute cooperates with the Technische Universität München

18.03.2008, Press releases

On the occasion of the delegation trip of the Minister-President of Bavaria to Abu Dhabi, the president of the Technische Universität München, Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Herrmann signed a partnership with Prof. Dr. Michael Ohadi, Provost and Interim President of the Petroleum Institute.

The Petroleum Institute has its network that links it to universities throughout the world. The good contacts with these partner universities facilitate the exchange of researchers and students. As part of the internationalization process new agreements and programs are continually being drawn up with foreign universities and international networks.

The Technische Universität München (TUM) is one of Germany¹s leading universities. It has roughly 420 professors, 6,500 academic and non-academic staff (including those at the university hospital “Rechts der Isar”), and 22,000 students. It focuses on the engineering sciences, natural sciences, life sciences, medicine, and economic sciences. After winning numerous awards, it was selected as an “Elite University” in 2006 by the Science Council (Wissenschaftsrat) and the German Research Foundation (DFG). TUM is dedicated to the ideal of a top-level research based entrepreneurial university.

The Department of Chemistry at the Technische Universität München has taken great efforts to meet the requirements of a rapidly changing scientific environment. It offers a broad diversity of subjects. Excellency in fundamental research on a high scientific level, and close scientific connections to the chemical industry serve as a basis for a high quality and practically oriented education of its students.

Therefore the Technische Universität München (TUM) is the leading research university of Germany in regard to research, publications, inventions / patents, doctorates and international reputation. In that sense, the Petroleum Institute was keen to cooperate with this world-class university. In April 2007, the Petroleum Institute signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Technische Universität München to explore areas of possible collaboration and develop an agreement between the two institutions.

For the purpose of developing highly qualified researchers, research cooperation between the PI and TUM the “Abu Dhabi – Munich Research Alliance” is built up. Researchers will be able to get their Ph.D. degree or make postdoctoral studies at the Technische Universität München and come back with high skills to join the PI and form a new generation of scientists willing to develop further research facilities at the PI to become a world class university.

The PI is sponsored by the National Oil Company (ADNOC) and finds great support from ADNOC’s CEO, H.E. Yousef Omeir Bin Yousef. The Petroleum Institute pursues an excellently equipped research institute in areas of the support and refining of natural gas and oil and collaborates with the TUM with the main focuses on Catalysis, Petroleum Chemistry and Construction Chemistry.
