We advertize a full PostDoc position in Soil Science at the Technische Universität München (Lehrstuhl für Bodenkunde, www.soil-science.com) within the framework of the priority program 1315 (http://www.spp1315.uni-jena.de/). The earliest starting date is July 1st 2013. Salary is TV-L E13 (100%) according to the German TV-L system (Tarifvertrag für den Öffentlichen Dienst der Länder). This position gives a 3-year opportunity to develop new conceptual and modelling approaches in a group focusing on the development of the biogeochemical interface in soils. The postdoc will be affiliated with the group of Prof. Ingrid Kögel-Knabner at Freising-Weihenstephan, nearby Munich in southern Bavaria, Germany. Description: The formation of biogeochemical interfaces in soils is controlled, among other factors, by the type of particle surfaces present and the assemblage of organic matter and mineral particles. We study the formation and maturation of interfaces with artificial soils which have been produced in long-term biogeochemical laboratory incubation experiments. As we hypothesize that high surface are and microporosity are of particular importance for interface formation, clay minerals, iron oxides and charcoal are used as major model components . Soil interface characteristics have been analyzed by several groups involved in the priority program for formation of organo-mineral interfaces, sorptive, thermal and mechanical interface properties, microbial community structure and function. Already after 6 months of incubation, the artificial soils exhibited different properties in relation to their composition, properties and community structure. A unique dataset evolves on the development and the dynamics of interfaces in soil in the different projects contributing to this experiment. The task for the postdoc is an integrated analysis based on a conceptual model and explorative statistical data analysis that will help to understand overall processes leading to the properties of biogeochemical interfaces in soil, that are the basis for their functions in ecosystems. Required experience: A PhD in geosciences, geoecology, biology, chemometrics, biometrics, environmental sciences or a related discipline is required. The candidate should have experience with conceptual and statistical modelling approaches and a fundamental understanding of sophisticated analytical techniques in soil science. The candidate should be highly motivated and willing to work with a larger team of scientists in an integrative approach. The Experimental Physics of Functional Materials (EFS) at Technical University Munich (TUM) is looking to recruit a research assistant (“HiWi”) for 6 months for device fabrication and characterization. The envisioned start date is January or February 2021. The research project is part of the MCQST excellent cluster. This project specifically focuses on searching for new materials for quantum information technologies. The main task will be to fabricate devices with electron beam lithography on single crystals and characterize them with ferromagnetic resonance techniques. We are looking for a research assistant to support us throughout the process for fabrication of devices.
