Master’s Student (m/f/d) – Internship

The Leibniz Institute for Food Systems Biology at the Technical University of Munich (Leibniz-LSB@TUM), a legal foundation under civil law based in Freising, is a prominent member of the Leibniz Association. Our institute integrates cutting-edge biomolecular research, bioinformatics, and high-performance analytical technologies to explore the complex interactions between the human organism and food components.
To strengthen our research group Transcriptome & Proteome Profiling / Section I, we are currently looking for a committed Master’s Student for an internship for a duration of 2-3 months. The topic of the project is “Method Development for Automated Solid-Phase DNA Synthesis”.

About the Project:
Solid-phase DNA synthesis is a fundamental technique in chemical biology and biotechnology, enabling the preparation of defined oligonucleotides for a wide range of research applications.
This project focuses on the experimental development and optimization of solid-phase DNA synthesis methods, including reaction workflows, process parameters, and analytical evaluation of synthesized oligonucleotides. The work is part of an ongoing PhD project and involves hands-on laboratory experimentation, systematic troubleshooting, and data-driven optimization.

Key Responsibilities:
• Perform solid-phase synthesis of short DNA oligonucleotides
• Assist in optimization of synthesis conditions
• Analyze synthesized oligonucleotides using PAGE, HPLC and LC-MS
• Support troubleshooting procedures and results according to good scientific practice
• Critically evaluate and discuss experimental outcomes

Ideal Applicants Must Have:
• A background in chemistry, chemical biology, biochemistry, biophysics or a related field
• Basic knowledge of organic or biomolecular chemistry
• Interest in nucleic acid and photochemical chemistry is advantageous but not required
• Background or interest in DNA-based technologies is a plus
• Ability to work independently with attention to detail
• Good written and verbal English communication skills
We are seeking a highly motivated individual with excellent interpersonal communication, time-management skills, commitment to laboratory safety and handling laboratory equipment with care. We are looking for a team player, who can work independently as well. This offer is aimed exclusively at students.

What we offer:
• Hands-on experience with automated DNA synthesis systems and analytical techniques.
• A responsible and engaging role in a leading university research environment.
• Close supervision and structured training.
• Opportunity to contribute to the ongoing research project.
• A supportive and collaborative working atmosphere.
• Flexible working hours to support a healthy work-life balance.

Equal Opportunities and Diversity
Leibniz-LSB@TUM is committed to equal opportunities, diversity, and a respectful working environment. We welcome applications regardless of gender, nationality, ethnic or social origin, religion or belief, disability, age, or sexual orientation and identity.
Applicants with severe disabilities or those with equivalent status will be given preferential consideration in cases of essentially equal qualification (§ 2 SGB IX).
