Master thesis in Hydrology of the Biodiversity Exploratories

06.03.2026, Studentische Hilfskräfte, Praktikantenstellen, Studienarbeiten

For the project WaterWeb, we want to do a geomorphological and hydrological characterization of water bodies in 3 sites in Germany.
There are currently available digital basic landscape models from the region and higher resolution drone pictures for 150 plots, which we want to use to better characterize the water bodies.

As a master student you will develop detailed hydrological profiles, including terrain gradient and slope, river curvature and meandering, areas of water retention, and drainage connectivity possibly linked to the topographic wetness index. These features will be mapped across each exploratory to assess connectivity and water flow patterns and to identify regional variation.
When including information on biodiversity and land use, you will be able to link across disciplines and answer interesting questions about land use effects in the landscape.

We provide:
- Data and space to work
- Training in understanding existing databases.
- Possibility to be part of publications.
- Co-supervision in an interdisciplinary environment

Your profile:
- Independent user of GIS tools (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, Phyton related modelling) is a must for this project).
- Previous experience in landscape modelling is desirable.

The thesis can be done remotely, with weekly update meetings. A period of one month for writing a comprehensive expose and showing preliminary workflow is required before registration.

If this thesis is for you, please contact Dr. Alejandra Parreno: alejandra.parreno@tum.de, with a CV including references to previous GIS use, enrollment in a masters degree at TUM and letter of motivation.

Looking forward to your application!
