Master thesis project: Impact of tissue fixation for mass spectrometry imaging analysis

🚀 Calling Future Masters of Mass Spectrometry! 👩🔬
Ever wanted to dive deep into cutting-edge tumor research while using cool sci-fi-level tech? At the Institute of Pathology, Technical University of Munich, we’re tackling the mysteries of cancer diagnostics with mass spectrometry imaging (MSI)—a technique that’s as powerful as it sounds.
Why Mass Spectrometry Imaging?
MSI lets us map molecules like peptides, proteins, metabolites, and lipids directly on tissue, without the need for annoying labels. Imagine Google Maps, but for molecules in a tumor sample! Even better, we correlate this molecular map with histological characteristics to reveal insights traditional methods can’t.
The Challenge
But wait, there’s a twist! Tissue fixation (the secret sauce of pathology) is both a hero and a villain. While it preserves tissue for analysis, it also introduces some frustrating limitations—like cross-linking nucleic acids and messing with genetic analyses. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, will be to understand the impact of sample fixation for MSI, helping to understand how we can get clearer diagnostics and have better results.
What’s in it for You?
- 💡 Hands-on expertise in mass spectrometry imaging and proteomics
