Floral resources in urban gardens (bachelor / master thesis or internship)
Are you interested in plants, bees and urbanization? We are looking for a motivated student to join the CityBees project for their bachelor or master thesis or for a research internship.
In the CityBees project we study the interactions between wild bees and flowers in cities. Although the availability of floral resources can support bees in cities, plants themselves are also affected by urbanization. We are looking for a student who wants to study how floral resources interact with urbanization.
Tasks may include the collection of nectar and pollen from six flower species in urban community gardens in Munich and/or Berlin, chemical analyses of pollen nutrition, and statistical analyses.
Timeframe: start spring 2025

Master Thesis: Advanced cathode design for high-performance Zinc-ion batteries
We focus on enhancing the performance of water-based Zn-ion batteries (ZIBs) by developing advanced cathode materials. By investigating organic, water-compatible compounds like cellulose, and optimizing their structure, crystallinity, and surface properties, the study aims to improve energy density, cycle stability, and rate capability. Techniques like XRD, SEM, TEM, and electrochemical methods will be used to address challenges and enhance ZIB performance for sustainable energy storage.

Master Thesis: Hydrogel-based electrolytes for enhanced ion transport in water-based Zinc-ion batteries
Water-based Zn-ion batteries (ZIBs) offer sustainable energy storage potential but face challenges in optimizing ion transport. This research explores using hydrogels as electrolytes to enhance ion diffusion and improve ZIB performance by mitigating zinc dendrite formation and electrolyte issues. Various hydrogels are examined for their structural and electrochemical properties using techniques like electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and neutron scattering to optimize ZIBs.
