Research Scientist (PostDoc) (m/f/d)   

The Ecosystem Dynamics and Forest Management Group at the TUM School of Life Sciences, Technical University of Munich studies how forests change in time and space. We quantify these changes, identify their causes and describe their impacts on biodiversity and cosystem services. To do this we use a combination of diverse methods, from empirical research to remote sensing and simulation modeling. A quantitative understanding of ecosystem dynamics provides the foundation for the development of robust management concepts for the sustainable provisioning of diverse ecosystem services and for maintaining the integrity and diversity of ecosystems in a changing world. Student Research Assistant(s) for Project on AI Ethics Literacy in Educational Technology w/ Focus on Web App Development   

The Research Group of the Professorship for Legal Tech is seeking to hire a student research assistant (5-7 hrs / week) to support an interdisciplinary research project on Co-designing a Risk-Assessment Dashboard for AI Ethics Literacy in EdTech conducted in collaboration with Prof. Anna Keune and Prof. Urs Gasser (both TUM School of Social Science and Technology). Various AI-based technologies are entering the world of education (“AI EdTech”) at an accelerating pace. The introduction of AI EdTech promises to improve learning. However, initial case studies reveal significant ethical and legal risks ranging from bias to privacy threats. Decision-makers struggle to manage these risks systematically and holistically, given the lack of best practice guidance and specific legislation. To fill this gap and foster AI ethics literacy, this project’s principal focus is to develop practical guidance for decision-makers to help them navigate through the process of ethical decision-making in applying AI EdTech. As part of the project, we are developing an online web resource with educational material on the topic, interactive elements illustrating relevant teaching scenarios, and possibly community building functions. You will be responsible for developing and maintaining this web app from its current alpha version. The position will run in semester increments until approximately May 2025.

BCI-Gym: Development of Virtual Environments for Brain-Computer Interface users training (Hiwi, Research Internship)   

The potential for invasive Brain Computer Interface (iBCI) systems to dramatically improve the livelihoods of those who have lost motor functionality has increased in recent years. This improvement has emerged due in part to advances in the field of deep learning, but the performance of these models varies significantly depending on the quality of the data collection and the design of the experiment. For iBCI participants who have lost the ability to move, the decoding models will be attempting to decode imagined movement, rather than actual movement. To have the best chances at decoding imagined movement, an effective and realistic virtual environment is essential as it increases the chance that the iBCI participant effectively embodies the virtual arm, thereby allowing for synchronization between the collected neural data and the imagined arm position. This position allows the researcher to work alongside experts in neuroscience, machine learning, and robotics in a supportive and resource-rich environment.
