Second international prize within a few weeks:

Prof. Herbert Spohn awarded Leonard Eisenbud Prize for Mathematics and Physics 2011

Prof. Dr. Herbert Spohn

14.01.2011, News

The American Mathematical Society honors the outstanding scientific achievements of Herbert Spohn, Professor for Applied Probability Theory and Statistical Physics at TUM, with the 2011 Leonard Eisenbud Prize for Mathematics and Physics. The award acknowledges in particular his group of works on stochastic growth processes.

He was awarded the prize “for his work on stochastic growth processes, which has led to predictions that have opened up many new lines of research in mathematics and physics.“ Herbert Spohn is most widely known through his work on interacting stochastic particle systems and his study of universal probability distributions for growth processes as connected to line ensembles and random matrix theory. He has striven for a deeper understanding of how macroscopic laws emerge from the underlying motion of atoms.

The Leonard Eisenbud Prize, endowed with US $ 5000, was established in 2006 in memory of the mathematical physicist, Leonard Eisenbud (1913-2004). The American Mathematical Society awards it every three years to honor a work or group of works that brings the two fields of mathematics and physics closer together. The first awardees were Andrew Strominger, and Cumrun Vafa (Harvard University) and Hirosi Ooguri (Tokyo University).
