Doctoral Student Position (m/f/d) – HyNOISE - Quiet Hydrogen Combustion

The Thermo-Fluid Dynamics group is looking for a doctoral student in hydrogen combustion, starting in early 2027. Please see the details below.

The research at the Thermo-Fluid Dynamics Group focuses on thermoacoustic combustion instabilities. These instabilities affect the safety and reliability of aircraft engines, rocket motors, gas turbines for power generation, and industrial combustion processes. Introducing hydrogen as a CO₂-neutral energy carrier poses numerous technological challenges, particularly when emissions of noise or nitrogen oxides (NOₓ) must also be reduced.

To analyze and control thermoacoustic instabilities, we combine fluid mechanics, acoustics, and combustion with methods from control engineering, nonlinear dynamics, and data-driven modeling (machine learning). We collaborate closely with research institutions and industry partners within and outside Europe.

HyNOISE is an MSCA Doctoral Network focused on understanding, predicting, and controlling noise and thermoacoustic instabilities in hydrogen-fueled combustion systems. The project combines the expertise of 12 European research institutions in advanced experiments, high-fidelity simulations, theory, automatic differentiation, and modeling to investigate ignition, flashback, combustion noise, and thermoacoustic stability in hydrogen combustors. The resulting tools and models will enable the design of quieter, more stable hydrogen combustion technologies for future power generation and propulsion systems, supporting Europe's decarbonization goals.

As a member of the HyNoise project, we are looking for a doctoral student (m/f/d).

Your Profile

  • A university Master's degree (Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Applied or Numerical Mathematics, etc.) with excellent academic performance.
  • Very good English language skills, both spoken and written.
  • Interest in our research topics and high motivation for independent scientific work within an excellent team.
  • Background and/or knowledge in at least one of the following areas: Combustion, Fluid Mechanics, Acoustics, Control Engineering, Dynamic Systems, Scientific Computing.
  • Experience in scientific computing and numerical simulation, especially with OpenFOAM, Python, Matlab, etc.
  • According to EC’s mobility rules, you must not have resided in Germany for more than 12 months during the last three years.

What we offer

  • The Technical University of Munich (TUM) is a renowned European university. We are offering good working conditions and an international research environment.
  • A full-time research position (40 hours a week, 3-year contract) with the opportunity to pursue a PhD (starting in early 2027).
  • Salary is of the order of 36,000 Euros per year, according to the funding rules set by the European Commission. Additional travel and mobility allowances may be granted.
