PostDoc/Senior Scientist in Robotics and Geriatronics

17.11.2025, Wissenschaftliches Personal

Munich Institute of Robotics and Machine Intelligence (MIRMI), Technical University of Munich (TUM) – Garmisch-Partenkirchen

About us

The Technical University of Munich (TUM) ranks among the world’s top technical universities (top 5 in Europe in THE World University Ranking; top 13 in the Global University Employability Ranking), offering an exceptional ecosystem linking academia, industry, and healthcare institutions. It is committed to excellence in research and teaching, interdisciplinary education, and the active promotion of promising young scientists. TUM benefits from the healthy mix of companies and startups of all sizes headquartered in the region and is tightly connected to regional research hospitals. The university also forges strong links with companies and scientific institutions across the world.

The Munich Institute of Robotics and Machine Intelligence (MIRMI) at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) is a globally visible interdisciplinary research center for Machine Intelligence, integrating robotics, AI, and perception. MIRMI’s key innovation sectors are the future of Health, Work, Environment, and Mobility. More than 70 professors from various TUM faculties cooperate within the framework of MIRMI.

A flagship initiative of MIRMI is the Geriatronics Lighthouse Project in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, dedicated to developing intelligent robotic and mechatronic systems that support senior care, rehabilitation, and medical assistance. The Geriatronics framework includes the assistive robot GARMI, an upper-limb exoskeleton, and humanoid robotic systems designed to enhance independence and quality of life.

About the Position

We are excited to announce a unique opportunity to join our dynamic team as Postdoctoral Researcher or Senior Scientist. If you are an experienced researcher with a strong background in mechatronics, robotics, or control systems eager to lead research, development, and system integration of service humanoid robots with a particular focus on manipulation and bimanual manipulation for healthcare and assistive scenarios, we invite you to apply.

In your future role as PostDoc/Senior Scientist you boost R&D activities, initiate and coordinate follow-up proposals, and manage and report interdisciplinary research projects. As the selected candidate you will also mentor PhD students and PostDocs and contribute to shaping the long-term vision for robotics and intelligent systems in healthcare and assistive technologies.

This position offers a unique opportunity to combine scientific excellence, technical innovation, and academic leadership in one of Europe’s most advanced robotic environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and contribute to research in robotics, mechatronics, and intelligent systems for applications in Geriatronics.
  • Boost and intensify research and development of next-generation service humanoid robots, including advanced manipulation and bimanual manipulation capabilities, robotic hands, tactile exoskeletons, and assistive mechatronic systems.
  • Coordinate national and international research projects, manage deliverables, and oversee their technical execution.
  • Drive forward the preparation of new and follow-up research proposals, forming consortia and developing long-term R&D strategies.
  • Supervise and mentor doctoral candidates and master’s students.
  • Collaborate with academic, clinical, and industrial partners in Germany and abroad.
  • Lead research on advanced manipulation control and the development of robotic systems for daily care activities, driving service humanoid robot (GARMI) and bimanual manipulation capabilities into real-world applications in Geriatronics.

Your Profile

  • PhD in Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics, or a closely related field.
  • Proven experience in robotic system design, humanoid robot development, manipulation and bimanual manipulation, control, or machine learning for robotics.
  • Excellent project management skills to meet and achieve the expected deliverables and milestones.
  • Strong research track records supported by publications in robotics or mechatronics.
  • Experience in research proposal writing and project acquisition.
  • Proficiency in C++/Python, ROS2 programming and tools such as MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English; German language skills are a plus.
  • Experience in team leadership, excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Motivation to develop as an independent researcher and long-term academic leader.

Our Offer

  • A stimulating, high-paced environment for cutting-edge research at one of Europe’s leading robotics centers.
  • Leadership in research and development of service humanoid robots, focusing on manipulation and bimanual interaction for real-world healthcare and assistance applications.
  • Opportunity of developing and boosting R&D strategy and writing follow-up proposals for large-scale national and international projects.
  • Access to state-of-the-art laboratories and the Geriatronics Center in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
  • Opportunity of academic advancement and leadership development.
  • Excellent worldwide network with leading robotics experts, companies, and healthcare partners.
  • Remuneration in line with the Collective Agreement for the Civil Service of the Länder TV-L in pay group E13–E14, depending on qualifications and experience.
