PhD position (m/f/d) in Mathematics / Discrete Optimization
16.07.2025, Wissenschaftliches Personal
A PhD position (75% TV-L E13, to be extended to 100% after 8 months) in discrete optimization is available at the Professorship of Optimization and Sustainable Decision Making (Prof. Dr. Clemens Thielen), which is located at the TUM Campus Straubing for Biotechnology and Sustainability (TUMCS) and affiliated with the Department of Mathematics. The expected starting date is November 2025.
The topic of the PhD project will be theoretical research in discrete optimization, with a particular focus on either graph algorithms or multiobjective optimization – depending on the successful candidate’s background and interests.
Your tasks:
- Develop new exact and approximation algorithms and perform complexity analyses for optimization problems on (temporal) graphs or for multiobjective optimization problems.
- Implement the developed algorithms (e.g., in Python) and evaluate their practical performance on artificial and/or real-world data.
- Teach tutorials (in English) for the courses Advanced Mathematics 1–2 and/or Statistics at the TUM Campus Straubing.
Your profile:
- Above average master’s degree in mathematics or (theoretical) computer science with a focus on discrete optimization or discrete algorithms.
- Profound mathematical modeling and programming skills.
- Experience with the design and analysis of graph algorithms or multiobjective optimization models is a plus.
- Very good command of spoken and written English.
We offer:
- An excellent, interdisciplinary research environment.
- Flexible working hours.
- A 3-year contract with salary and benefits depending on experience, according to the public service agreement of Bavaria – TV-L E13 (75%, to be extended to 100% after 8 months).
How to apply?
Interested candidates should submit their application via email to Prof. Dr. Clemens Thielen: clemens.thielen@tum.de
The application should include:
- Letter of motivation explaining your interest and suitability for the position.
- Curriculum vitae (CV).
- Transcripts and degree certificates of your BSc and MSc studies (with detailed course and grade information).
- If applicable: List of relevant projects and publications.
- Optional: A letter of recommendation from your MSc thesis supervisor.
The position is suitable for disabled persons. Disabled applicants will be given preference in case of generally equivalent suitability, aptitude and professional performance.
