Open PostDoc Position at the Munich Institute of Robotics and Machine Intelligence in Mechatronics

21.10.2024, Wissenschaftliches Personal

About us

Located in the prosperous capital of Bavaria and home to over 50000 students, the Technical University of Munich (TUM) is one of the world’s top universities (top 3 European technical universities in THE World University Ranking, top 50 in Shanghai Ranking, top 10 in Global University Employability Ranking, etc.) and home to one of the most vibrant environments in robotics. It is committed to excellence in research and teaching, interdisciplinary education, and the active promotion of promising young scientists. TUM benefits from the healthy mix of companies and startups of all sizes headquartered in the region and is tightly connected to regional research hospitals. The university also forges strong links with companies and scientific institutions across the world. The Munich Institute of Robotics and Machine Intelligence (MIRMI) is a globally visible interdisciplinary research center for machine intelligence, which is the integration of robotics, artificial intelligence and perception. Its three central innovation sectors are the future of health, the future of work, the future of the environment, and the future of mobility. More than 60 professors from various TUM faculties cooperate within the framework of MIRMI.

A lighthouse initiative of the MIRMI is the Geriatronics project located in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The term Geriatronics refers to the use of robotics, mechatronics, and information technology, in particular machine intelligence, in the fields of gerontology and geriatrics as well as in preventive, outpatient, and inpatient care of the elderly.

Description

We are looking for an outstanding and highly motivated postdoctoral researcher with a strong background in mechatronics to join our team at MIRMI and contribute to the Geriatronics Lighthouse Initiative. This position presents a unique opportunity to engage with 3D CAD design of new prototype, and the implementation of innovative mechatronic solutions related to GARMI and Geriatronics, focused on enhancing daily care and healthcare scenarios.

Your research will be integrated into our existing Geriatronics framework, which includes our assistive robot GARMI, an upper limb exoskeleton, and a humanoid robotic hand. We encourage you to develop and articulate your own scientific ideas within our research objectives, both verbally and in writing. Our team will provide comprehensive support for publishing your findings, with opportunities to present at prestigious conferences and journals such as IROS, ICRA, RAL, TR-O, HRI, and other relevant journals.

As a member of the MIRMI team, you will collaborate closely with colleagues in both Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Munich, reporting on your research activities and progress within the Geriatronics Project Y. Your responsibilities may also include maintaining mechatronic platforms alongside team members, integrating your results with the GARMI system and other hardware setups. Your primary workplace will be in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, development, robotic hands and the testing of tactile exoskeleton
  • Integration of the developed end-effectors to existing force controlled robot arms to build a complete system
  • Maintaining the communication and exchange with industrial and scientific partners during the project,
  • Co-supervision of PhD candidates and Master’s and Bachelor’s students on projects related to mechatronics development and,
  • Funding acquisition and management of research proposals (scouting potential opportunities, form consortia, proposal writing) related to the field of expertise,
  • Driving publication of projects results in leading journals and conferences in the robotics community.
  • Contributing to the teaching activities at the Master's level courses.

Requirements

  • PhD in robotics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer engineering or a related field.
  • Hands on experience and extensive background in the full stack development (i.e., from design to assembly and testing) of robotic and mechatronics systems with a particular focus on medical and surgical systems, and sensing hardware,
  • Strong track record of publications in mechatronics design and development,
  • Experience with MATLAB Simulink, C++/Python and ROS,
  • Very good command of the English language (German language is a plus),
  •  Excellent interpersonal and communication skills,
  • High motivation and willingness to work in an international and interdisciplinary team,
  • Maturity and capacity to begin an independent research career,
  • Desire and potential to develop as a future academic leader.

What we offer

  • A stimulating, high-paced environment for cutting-edge research in various fields including robotics, machine learning and systems intelligence.
  • An exceptional opportunity to experience research in a highly inspiring international environment.
  • A responsible position with interesting and challenging tasks in an interdisciplinary scientific and management team.
  • Worldwide networking opportunities with leading robotics experts, innovative companies in the area of manufacturing and robotics, and local politics.
