Research Associates / Doctoral Candidates (f/m/d) in Modeling, Control, and Operation of Converter Dominated Power Systems

15.04.2024, Wissenschaftliches Personal

The Chair of Electric Power Transmission and Distribution at TUM’s School of Engineering and Design is looking for Research Associates / Doctoral Candidates in Modeling, Control, and Operation of Converter Dominated Power Systems

Are you enthusiastic about developing and applying innovative engineering techniques to facilitate the energy transition and seeking to contribute to a dynamic research setting? Let's collaborate to shape tomorrow's energy systems!
Our research focuses on developing solutions to improve the electric grid’s accessibility, resiliency to high-impact events, day-to-day reliability, sustainability, and security against cyber and physical attacks.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Research and Analysis: Engage in extensive literature reviews to stay abreast of current trends and advancements in power systems, focusing on steady state and dynamic modeling and control for converter-dominated grids, renewable energy integration, and grid resilience. Undertake comprehensive data analysis and develop sophisticated mathematical models for simulating power system behaviors under various scenarios.
  • Development and Testing: Design and develop control algorithms to enhance grid performance. This includes software development for implementing these controls and conducting laboratory experiments for validation.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Participate in collaborative projects with researchers, industry partners, and government agencies. Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and conferences to disseminate research outcomes widely.
  • Innovation and Problem-Solving: Innovate solutions to modern power system challenges, including renewable energy integration and grid resilience. Identify and address development and testing phase issues.
  • Education and Mentoring: Play an instrumental role in educational activities, creating instructional materials, assisting in lectures and laboratory courses, and mentoring students involved in research projects.

Ideal profile:

  • Academic and Technical Qualifications: Possess an above average Master's degree in Electrical/Power Engineering or a related discipline, with deep knowledge of energy technologies, particularly electric power grids, and integration of renewable energy sources. A proficient understanding of control systems, advanced data analysis skills, and strong programming capabilities are essential.
  • Personal Attributes and Skills: The role demands a candidate with exceptional adaptability and flexibility, capable of navigating the evolving research landscape. A robust passion for research, an independent and innovative work style, and the ability to conceptualize complex systems are critical. The candidate must excel in knowledge transfer, showcasing versatility across various group activities, and possess excellent collaborative and communication skills. Organizational skills and the capacity to manage projects efficiently in a dynamic environment are also vital.
  • Language Proficiency: Very good command of the English language is mandatory for effective scientific communication, while knowledge of the German language is advantageous for local engagement.

Our offer:

We provide the chance to conduct research alongside a team of highly motivated scholars and take advantage of the research setting provided by one of Europe's and the world's top universities. Your doctoral thesis will be supported in the research area mentioned above. The offered full time position for a research associate (salary level TV-L E13) can be filled starting June 2024 and is initially limited to 2 years. Further employment is possible and intended.
To ensure equal opportunity, applications from qualified women are particularly welcome. Disabled candidates will be given preference if they are equally qualified. Applications from candidates with an international background are explicitly encouraged.

Your application:

Please, submit the application as a single PDF file to jobs.td.een@tum.de with the subject line “E13-CDPS Application”. The application should contain the following documents:
  • Statement of Long-Term Career and Research Goals (1 page max)
  • Curriculum vitae, including a list of publications with links
  • Complete academic transcripts
  • Letters of reference from previous positions held (including internships), if available, or contact information for two references.
Applications submitted by April 30 will be given full consideration.

If you have any questions prior to applying, please contact Prof. Dr. Reinaldo Tonkoski at reinaldo.tonkoski@tum.de.
