Promotionsstelle zu besetzen zum Thema Computational design of modular multi-robot teams (Ph.D.)

25.09.2023, Wissenschaftliches Personal

We are offering a full-time position in our lab in Garching/Munich as Research & Teaching Assistant (m/f/d) for Computational design of modular multi-robot teams (Ph.D.)

The Laboratory for Product Development and Lightweight Design (LPL) focuses on the design and optimization of complex technical systems. We develop methods, tools, and specific solutions to technical problems with optimal functionality, weight, and cost. Currently, we are looking for a research assistant (m/f/d) in our robot group

Topic

The position is focused on the top-down, optimisation driven design, planning and control of multi-robot systems focused on manufacturing applications. We envision that such systems would allow the realisation of designs with complex structures. The project encompasses various facets such as systems design, optimisation, robust design, control synthesis and simulation of modular multi-robot setups that can together carry out a common objective, like carrying out Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM). The prospective candidate will play a pivotal role in advancing such flexible robot cells, collaborating closely with industry partners to achieve tangible outcomes.

Tasks

• Collaborate in the development and optimization of multi-robot systems, focusing on the co-design of hardware and control with a priority on lightweight design.
• Engage in computational design methods, numerical optimization, and machine learning approaches.
• Participate in cross-functional teams to design, manufacture, and test components.
• Support lectures and lab exercises; supervise students in related project activities.
• Coordinate activities of the Robot Systems Research Group

Required profil (please explain in the cover letter)

• Master's degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related field.
• Proficiency in robot kinematics, dynamics, planning, control, numerical methods and optimisation techniques.
• A proactive approach to problem-solving and a strong commitment to project objectives and hands-on development.
• Fluent in German or a strong willingness to learn the language.

We offer

• Innovative topic with industry proximity, supportive and interdisciplinary team culture, the opportunity to graduate with a Ph.D., and possible research stays abroad
• Full position as research/teaching assistant (m/f/d) with salary according to TV-L

Application

All applications received by 08.10.2023 will be considered. Please send your application in German or English (one pdf file, reference code CompDesRob) by email to: applications.lpl@ed.tum.de. Please visit our website to check for extensions of the deadline.

The position is suitable for severely disabled persons. Severely disabled applicants will be given preference in the event of otherwise essentially equal suitability, ability and professional performance. TUM promotes equality between women and men. The university aims to increase the proportion of women; qualified women are therefore strongly encouraged to apply.
