Research assistant, PhD Position - Numerical modelling of three-dimensional endwall flow phenomena in axial compressors and investigating the impact of design measures improving the aerodynamic robustness

29.06.2023, Wissenschaftliches Personal

The Technical University of Munich offers a wide spectrum of teaching and research with access to excellent IT and facilities in an innovative environment. The Institute of Turbomachinery and Flight Propulsion is pursuing research in technologies of future aero engine architectures for the next generation of aircraft. In this context, the development of turbomachinery and the integra-tion of novel components enhancing the thermodynamic cycle take a central role, focused on environmental awareness and reduction of fossil fuel consumption. The institute follows these goals in different research frameworks and collaborative re-search with industry partners.

Requirements Profile
The following requirements apply for the position at the offer:
• Excellent grade degree from a university with a focus on aerospace, physics, or related fields
• Very good and fundamental knowledge in the areas of theoretical fluid mechanics and structural mechanics, as well as aero-thermal modelling
• A high fascination for technical/scientific problems of theoretical and numerical research
• Experience in the field of numerical time-accurate flow simulation, preferably turbomachinery
• Ability to approach work in an analytical, imaginative, and structured way and to work independently on research projects
• Good team player and inclination towards acting in networks
• Very good communication skills and ability to express yourself in spoken and written German and English language
• Proficient use of common programming languages, MS-office, data storage, and image processing
• Ability to support the institute’s teaching in tutorials and seminars
• Enjoyment being initiative and liaising with people in the workplace
• Will to achieve the Ph.D. degree (Promotion)

Tasks
As a research assistant, you will be responsible for the coordination and technical conduction of a 3.5-year research pro-ject aimed at the numerical modelling of three-dimensional endwall flow phenomena in axial compressors and investi-gating the impact of design measures improving aerodynamic robustness. In this research project, you will generate new capabilities for controlling the three-dimensional flow and further increasing the efficiency of aero engine axial compressors by implementing new design approaches – and you will improve the aerodynamic robustness of future compressors. The highly innovative project will generate fundamental knowledge about the methodologic handling and capturing of endwall flow phenomena, which are increasingly dominant in compressors. The collaborative frame with a prestigious industry partner will give insight into future technology requirements.

The project will be carried out at the Institute of Turbomachinery and Flight Propulsion, bearing the following tasks:
- Research on the fundamentals of highly three-dimensional endwall flow structures in blading of modern axial compressors in a multi-stage environment, with an emphasis on flow topology, loss mechanisms, and strength of occurrence.
- Investigation of effective means to control the behavior of leakage flow in the tip region of compressor rotor blades, applying novel design features implemented in the casing and using time-resolving numerical flow simulations.
- Implementation of blade geometry changes making an impact on the tip leakage flow behavior in the region of compressor blade radial running gaps.
- Integration and optimisation of effective solutions and development of criteria for focused design improvements on com-pressor rotor blades in the near-end wall region.

We Offer
You will be a part of an international working environment with a strong focus on innovation in the field of turbomachinery and flight propulsion. The job offers the opportunity to write a dissertation and obtain a Ph.D. degree.
Staff selection for this position according to suitability, performance, and capability is based on the German TV-L full-time scheme and is limited to 3,5 years. Contracting is in accordance with the German „Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz“. Severely disabled applicants with essentially equivalent suitability are being hired with preference. The Technical University of Munich strives to increase female employees - therefore, applications of women are particularly welcome.

Application
We are looking forward to your application, including a motivation letter, high-school diploma (Abiturzeugnis), university certifi-cates plus a transcript of records (Hochschulzeugnisse mit Notenspiegel), and proofs of employment (Bes-chäftigungsnachweise).
