Autonomous Mobility Systems Scientist (m/w/d) for Smart, Connected AVs

22.06.2023, Wissenschaftliches Personal

We are looking for an enthusiastic Autonomous Mobility Systems Scientist with a passion for future mobility and autonomous driving. As a part of an interdisciplinary team of research and industry, you will develop solutions for future mobility systems.

  Motivation

The future of mobility is connected, autonomous, shared, and electrified! These building blocks form the basis for creating mobility solutions that ensure a more sustainable future of transportation. But how do you link the technological solutions and products of automation into systems that move people and goods sustainably, safely, and comfortably? In addition to the technology for automation, consisting of Perception, Planning, and Control, we are asking this question in our new project AUTOtech.agil. Key to the answer to this question is an intelligent, central control unit that orchestrates future autonomous vehicle fleets, optimizes road traffic, clears the road in the event of a disaster, switches traffic lights and virtual traffic signs, and enables sovereign intervention by public authorities. To perform these tasks, it accesses a digital city twin, registers the position of all connected vehicles, and continuously simulates the traffic situation and possible interventions. Become part of our Smart Mobility Lab at the Chair of Automotive Technology and develop the brain of the autonomous future!

Your Challenge

You ensure that autonomous vehicles drive efficiently and safely in the cities of the future. To this end, you design concepts for the optimal integration of individual vehicles into the overall mobility system and the operational organization of AV fleets through a control center. Their introduction should both increase the efficiency of traffic and also be safe. You identify future potentials of (partially) autonomous traffic with central intelligence, such as dynamic road pricing or support for blue light driving. Critical traffic situations should be detected and avoided at an early stage. This can be achieved, for example, by developing learning algorithms and bringing together different sensor systems in the vehicle and on the road. Where you put the focus - that is up to you. The concepts are technically defined and validated, for example, with the help of traffic simulations. As part of a diverse consortium of leading research institutions, innovative SMEs, international companies, and municipalities, you will gather valuable stakeholder input and gain a wide range of insights into the mobility of the future. In close collaboration with the team at the chair, you will further develop our software for autonomous and teleoperated driving. You will prepare the results for customers and political decision-makers so that recommendations for action become apparent, communicate these, and develop an overall picture of future mobility together with the project partners.

Your Profile

You have a strong interest in automated driving and mobility transition. You have completed your master's degree in a technical field, such as mechanical engineering, computer science, transportation systems, or civil/environmental engineering with a focus on traffic engineering, with very good grades. You bring solid programming skills in a higher programming language (e.g., Python, Java). You already work with traffic simulations and digital twins, or they spark your interest. You break down complex topics by approaching them in a structured and organized manner. Just like the control center of the autonomous traffic of the future, you always keep an overview, communicate with all stakeholders in the project and ensure optimally organized processes.

Your Opportunities

As part of the team, you can actively shape the mobility transition. You can build an innovative network in science and industry and take on responsibility for the project and at the chair right from the start. This is particularly relevant if you later want to realize your ideas and set up a company in which we will always support you. You can research and do your doctorate on a topic you are passionate about. By working with industry and start-up partners, you will be optimally prepared for future tasks in this field. You will be supported and challenged on your way by a team of experienced Smart Mobility experts. By supervising student research projects, you will increase the potential of your workforce and build up leadership skills.

What We Offer

  • Temporary full-time position according to TV-L E-13 100% for a total of 3 years
  • Possibility for doctoral studies and start-up founding
  • Innovative research area with high societal interest and relevance
  • Modern working environment and infrastructure
