Junior Research Group Leader in Machine Learning (m/f/x)

The Munich Center for Machine Learning (MCML) is a joint research initiative of Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU) and Technische Universität München (TUM). It is one of six nationwide AI centers in Germany to receive permanent funding as part of the German and Bavarian government's AI strategy. Our vision is to strengthen regional, national and international competence in AI and to make the corresponding potential accessible to users from science and industry.
As a JRG group leader, you will develop an original research project in a field related to one of the three research areas of MCML: Foundations of Machine Learning; Perception, Vision, and NLP; and Domain-Specific Machine Learning. You will lead a research group for which you are expected to hire two PhD students (both TV-L E 13), who will be funded by MCML.
Required Qualifications:
- Outstanding PhD in the area of informatics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, mathematics, statistics, data science, or physics
- Outstanding track record, demonstrated by high-impact publications in top venues of machine learning or related fields
- Excellent communication skills, fluency in English (written and oral)
- Experience in mentoring M.Sc. or B.Sc. students / running a research team

The MCML funding includes the position of the PI (TV-L E15) and two PhD students (TV-L E13). Your office will be located at either LMU Munich (Faculty for Mathematics, Informatics and Statistics) or TUM on the Garching campus. The position is a TVL-E15 position in the German TV-L system (based on the tariff contracts for public service, commensurate with experience). The position is for three years, with the possibility of extension upon re-evaluation. Working hours are flexible.
