The Chair of Biological Imaging (CBI) at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and the Institute of Biological and Medical Imaging (IBMI) at Helmholtz Munich are an integrated, multi-disciplinary research unit, which provide bioengineering solutions to urgent societal needs. CBI scientists develop next-generation imaging and sensing methods to measure previously inaccessible properties of living systems, hence, catalyzing breakthroughs in biology, medicine, and the environment. Comprising 11 inter-disciplinary laboratories and scientists from more than 25 countries, CBI offers state-of-the-art infrastructure for innovative research and an ideal environment to accelerate your career.
The Mission:
The successful candidate will contribute to the development of our novel optoacoustic sensing platform for early detection of cardio-metabolic diseases as well as characterization and classification of skin diseases. You will be part of our highly impactful research programs funded by European and national grants. You will plan, design, and manufacture our sensor to be used in clinical trials, work on data acquisition and data analysis. The results of your work will not only accelerate your scientific career, but they are also expected to greatly impact society, improving the quality of life of patients world-wide and yielding a vast potential for commercial exploitation.
Your profile:
The successful applicant must have the following:
• Masters’ degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics or a related discipline
• Experience with electronic circuits design and testing
• Excellent programming skills with MATLAB and C++ (Python is optional)
• Experience with CAD design (AutoCad, Inventor, Solidworks, NI Altium, Eagle) desired but not mandatory
• Experience with optical, mechanical, and chemical sensors including sensor characterization and testing is a plus
• Experience with electronic devices manufacturing processes is a plus but not required
• Excellent academic study record
• Strong motivation, scientific curiosity, and commitment to scientific excellence
• Team player skills and enthusiasm to work in a multi-disciplinary, collaborative environment
• Excellent command of the English language.

The successful applicant will initially have a 3 years for PhD positions contract, with the possibility of extension. Salary will commensurate with work experience and seniority (TV-L E13-75%).
