PhD position in Co-governance of nature-based solutions (TV-L E13, 65%, 36 months)

31.03.2021, Wissenschaftliches Personal

The Chair for Strategic Landscape Planning and Management at the TUM School of Life Sciences Weihensteph-an invites applications for a PhD position in Co-Governance of nature-based solutions (TV-L E13, 65%, 36 months, for the research project „JUSTNature“ – Activation of nature-based solutions for a just low carbon transi-tion, funded by the European Union).

Cities can be exemplars in leading the way towards a low-carbon society, while simultaneously addressing several other challenges arising from urbanisation and structural socio-economic changes. Yet, cities represent a complex setting where climate impacts are not distributed evenly. Debates on these inequities have gained further traction linked to the recent spread of SARS-CoV-2. Just implementation of Low carbon | High air quality nature-based solutions NbS will be driven by the co-design, co-creation and co-decision of supporting interventions that support effective governance, long-term NbS operation, social & innovative business models, and efficient technologies.

JUSTNature aims to activate Low carbon | High air quality nature-based solutions (NbS) for a just transition to low-carbon cities within seven European city practice labs. TUM will lead the work package “Low carbon and air quality NBS systems governance” to empower the place-making capacity of a multitude of actors by defining typologies of governance capabilities and possible interventions. Governance processes and interventions will be co-assessed and co-monitored before, during, and after implementation at site and city scale and beyond. Special attention will be paid to collaboration, participation and communication strategies as well as the linking of top-down and bottom-up approaches. Finally, learned lessons and recommendations for governance interventions and strategies will be synthesised and up-scaled in a collaborative process. The PhD position will be placed in the framework of this work package.

The Chair for Strategic Landscape Planning and Management at the School of Life Sciences is one of the leaders in its field, with an excellent track record of international and national research. Research concentrates on developing knowledge, tools, and innovative strategies for sustainable development of rural/urban landscapes facing major challenges of socio-demographic, environmental, technological and climate change, with expertise in transdisciplinary research and knowledge transfer to practice. In particular, urban ecology, urban green infra-structure planning and strategies for urban adaptation to climate change via NBS are focus areas.

You have an excellent degree (M.Sc. or comparable) in landscape architecture, landscape planning, geography, environmental sciences, social sciences, or a related discipline. You have an interest in governance processes and possibly skills in social science methods, such as interviews and surveys. You are fluent in English and have excellent writing skills. Moreover, you are a team worker with preferably international experience.

We offer a PhD position (TV-L E 13 65%, 36 months, with a possibility for extension up to 54 months) in an interdisciplinary team. The conditions of employment follow the rules of the German tariffs of public services (TV-L). As member of the Graduate Centre Weihenstephan, you profit from an attractive qualification programme during your doctoral project.

Within the project, you have a chance to actively participate in research activities and exchange with international experts from research and practice.

As an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer, TUM explicitly encourages nominations of and applications from women as well as from all others who would bring additional diversity dimensions to the university’s research and teaching strategies. Preference will be given to disabled candidates with essentially the same quali-fications.
