Synthetic Neurobiology Master’s project on generating genetically-engineered mammalian cells with magnetic properties for remote imaging and manipulation

Are you interested in synthetic biology, and do you want to contribute to developing novel techniques to non-invasively manipulate biological systems using magnetic fields?

Then you are likely interested in projects on how to genetically engineer mammalian cells in our laboratory (westmeyerlab.org) at the Munich School of Bioengineering (https://www.bioengineering.tum.de/) of TUM.

In this project, we build on our previous work to genetically engineering mammalian cells to render them magnetic. To achieve this, we use different approaches: 1.) Rational design of genetic frameworks yielding magnetic structures in mammalian cells. 2.) Reverse engineering of biological entities that are known to generate magnetic biominerals.

Your Profile excellent grades in your Bachelor studies or an excellent and recent Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in synthetic biology, biological engineering, biochemistry, biophysics, neurobiology, biomedical engineering, or related academic programs, excellent knowledge in molecular biology, advanced cloning, and mammalian cell culture, a keen interest in bio-magnetism and genetic tools for cell manipulation, as well as neurobiology, a strong interest in de novo protein design, the ability to be self-motivated and work with an interdisciplinary team of bioengineers, biochemists, neuroscientists, and data scientists, excellent English language and organizational skills an openness and mobility to collaborate with our partners at Max Planck Institutes, MIT, Caltech, and the University of Washington.
