Ph.D. Student Position in Agricultural and Applied Economics

The Chair Group of Agricultural Production and Resource Economics at the TUM School of Life Sciences Weihenstephan and the TUM School of Management offers a Ph.D. Student Position in Agricultural and Applied Economics starting at the earliest April 1, 2019. Initial appointment will be 1.5 years with the possibility of extension. Salary is in accordance with the German State Regulated Public Salary Scale (TV-L E13 2/3).

Tasks The successful candidate is expected to actively engage in an international project on agricultural value chain financing of climate-smart agriculture (CSA) technologies in India funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and supported in partnership by the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security in South Asia (CCAFS). The core aspects include (i) identifying the key CSA technologies based on their contributions to farm productivity and efficiency, (ii) developing schemes for agricultural value chain financing in India and South Asia, respectively, and (iii) proposing effective solutions for supporting the adoption of such CSA technologies. Qualifications The applicant should possess: an excellent university degree in economics, applied economics (e.g. agricultural and resource economics, supply chain management, agribusiness management), or related disciplines; strong analytical skills with a focus on quantitative data analysis (e.g. econometrics, statistics) as well as qualitative approaches (e.g. in-depth interviewing, survey design, stakeholder analysis); knowledge of theories for horizontal/vertical collaboration in value chains (e.g. transaction cost economics, collective action, etc.) and skills in systematic analysis of value chain dynamics; experience (or interest) in research on India and other South Asian countries; an interest in teaching; excellent spoken and written English.
