The development of MEMS sensors enables the comprehensive recording of motion sequences. Interpreting this data and evaluating it in terms of achieving athletic goals remains a difficult task. Project description: In the "Mechatronic Ski Binding" project, we are developing a ski binding to make skiing safer in the future. The risk of injury is estimated using an algorithm and the release threshold of the binding is adjusted accordingly. The algorithm consists of a knowledge-based part and a data-driven part. The combination of these two approaches is intended to provide the most robust distinction between normal and riskier maneuvers. Extensive data has been collected using the current prototype. Task Description: From exploratory data mining to the deployment of an algorithm to the creation of a framework, many different fields of activity are possible. Mainly methods for the data-driven algorithm have to be developed. Those methods then should be evaluated with respect to system requirements, such as real-time capability or the ability to explain certain algorithmic control states depending on the input parameters. This thesis aims to quantify the uncertainty and sensitivities of an existing multiphysics (contiuum level) simulation tool. The tool calculates frictional losses in highly-loaded machine elements (e.g. gears, bearings, ...) based on the choice of materials, loading conditions and lubricant. Therefore, the results depend on a multitude of parameters, functions and algorithms, where each is subject to uncertainty. In order to determine the reliability of the results, the uncertainties from the input and from within the system are analyzed systematically and sensitivities are evaluated. Wheat is one of the most produced crops in the world. Since 1960 wheat yields have increased substantially but are stagnating in recent years. Furthermore, the nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) of modern wheat varieties is low, which leads to nitrogen losses to the environment. Breeding aims to increase NUE of wheat varieties using modern high throughput field phenotyping (HTFP) techniques. In HTFP a variety of secondary plant traits related to primary traits such as yield, quality or NUE are assessed in order to spot ideotypes with superior performances. Often, these traits are measured by multi- or hyperspectral radiometry, which is highly influenced by the canopy architecture. In this thesis you will develop and apply an outdoor phenotyping procedure to measure plant architectural traits in a diverse wheat variety testing panel. Ideally, the result of this first step will be a 3-D representation of a wheat plant in a canopy of which you can extract different plant architectural traits such as leaf angle and leaf area. You will verify your measurements by taking manual measurements as well. In a last step, you will compare your findings with multi- or hyperspectral radiometry measurement of the canopy and look for the effects of the canopy architectural traits on the radiometric signal. This work requires a strong interest in technology as well as basic programming skills (R, Python, …) or the interest to acquire them.
