In this context, the Forschungs-Neutronenquelle Heinz Maier-Leibnitz (FRM II, Prof. Dr. Winfried Petry) and the Department of Radiation Oncology (Prof. Dr. Stephanie Combs) at the Klinikum rechts der Isar (MRI, university hospital of the Technical University of Munich) are looking for a common PhD candidate in medical physics (m/f) for the GRK project C3 “Advancing therapy planning for neutron therapy at MEDAPP”. Task description The neutron therapy facility MEDAPP is a worldwide unique tool for irradiation of tumours with fission neutrons. Due to the special application, neither an established treatment planning system, nor a solution of other neutron therapy facilities can be used for treatment planning. Using existing preliminary works, the concept should be further developed towards a real, initially retrospective application. It includes verification of the beam parameters, comparison and implementation of suitable models to derive the tissue composition from CT/MR data sets, and selection as well as validation of an appropriate code for dose calculation. An intuitive user interface and the provision of commonly used evaluation tools conclude the project. With this implementation, a considerably improved evaluation of the patient-specific dose distribution is possible, especially concerning the impact on healthy tissue and organs at risk. Benefits Admission to the program will include an original qualification concept featuring a set of compulsory and eligible training activities, to ensure not only academic excellence and scientific independence but also the development of fundamental personal effectiveness. Candidate The project is a multidisciplinary task, including measurements, algorithm development, theoretical considerations and code development. Therefore, you hold a highly ranked MSc in Physics, Engineering or Informatics, preferably with Medical Physics background, have proven experience in coding (preferably in C++/C#) and application development, bring technical proficiency, scientific creativity and team working skills and have fluent English knowledge (spoken and written). Any of the following is considered as a benefit: Good understanding of nuclear processes relevant to neutron and photon transport as well as their interaction in matter for medical applications, experience in (medical) applications of treatment planning, data processing and radiation physics, know-how in medical data formats (DICOM), GUI development - may be even in 3D, experience with Monte Carlo transport and interaction codes, preferably MCNP or Geant4. In the world of biomolecules such as proteins and the hereditary nucleic acids DNA and RNA, three-dimensional structure determines function. Analysis of the passage of such molecules through nanopores offers a relatively new, but highly promising, technique for obtaining information about their spatial conformations. However, interactions between the test molecules and the proteins used as pores have so far hindered quantitative analysis of the behavior of even simply structured molecules within nanopores. This problem must be solved before the technique can be routinely used for structure determination. In a project carried out under the auspices of the Cluster of Excellence “Nanosystems Initiative Munich” (NIM), researchers led by LMU physicist Professor Ulrich Gerland and Professor Friedrich Simmel (Technische Universitaet Muenchen, TUM) have developed a new method that depends on the analysis of reverse translocation through asymmetric pores, which minimizes the interference caused by interactions with the pore material itself. This approach has enabled the team to construct a theoretical model that allows them to predict the translocation dynamics of nucleic acids that differ in their nucleotide sequences.
