Studentische Hilfskraft (HiWi) for Hydraulic Engineering – Sediment Management & Numerical Modeling

04.02.2026, Student assistants, internships, student research projects

Hiwi for EU-Horizon Project iNNO SED, Chair of Hydraulic Engineering, TUM School of Engineering and Design

Context
Transverse structures such as weirs and dams interrupt the continuous transport of sediments in rivers and thereby impair their ecological continuity and the achievement of a good ecological potential. Within the EU-Horizon project iNNO SED, innovative sediment management measures are investigated and evaluated at the demonstration site Iller to support the restoration of ecological river functions.

The project combines field measurements, data analysis, and numerical modeling to assess sediment dynamics and the effectiveness of sediment management strategies. The student assistant will support the evaluation of existing field data, the development and analysis of numerical models, and the preparation and execution of future field measurement campaigns.

Methods & Tasks
Data Analysis
Analysis of sediment samples, cross-sectional survey data, aerial imagery, and results from numerical simulations
Remote Sensing
- Assisting in the preparation and organization of future field measurement campaigns
- Getting to know selected measurement devices and field measurement techniques
Modeling
- 2D hydraulic modeling using openTELEMAC-MASCARET
- Evaluation and visualization of simulation results using MATLAB
Desired Profile
- Enrolled Master’s student in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field (background in hydraulic engineering / water resources management required)
- Interest in and/or experience with geospatial and geostatistical analysis (e.g. QGIS, ArcGIS)
- Interest in and/or experience with numerical modeling
- Skills in data analysis using MATLAB (and/or Python)
- Motivation to work in an interdisciplinary research project and to participate in field work

Workload and Duration
10–20 hours/week, initially for 6 months (extension possible).
