HiWi for "Implementation of a Head Mounted Display (Augmented Reality) in the Rotorcraft Simulation Environment ROSIEX"

03.04.2024, Studentische Hilfskräfte, Praktikantenstellen, Studienarbeiten

Hours: 10-20 per week (negotiable) Also, it is possible to perform a master's thesis! Background: At the Chair for Rotorcraft and Vertical Flight, the Rotorcraft Simulation Environment ROSIEX is used to research different areas relating to the future of vertical flight. It is a state-of-the-art fixed base simulator that enables fast and comprehensive tests of systems and components as well as valuable insights into their impact on the aircraft and its personnel. One of these components is a so-called Head/Helmet Mounted Display (HMD). It is used to display information and data within the pilot's field of view. By using such HMDs, the pilot does not need to look at the so-called head-down instrument panel. This can lead to a reduced workload and improved situational awareness. In previous studies, a former HMD system has been evaluated at the chair. Due to advancements in technology, better devices are available on the market nowadays. Hence, it has been decided to invest in a new HMD. The so-called HoloLens 2 has been bought and shall be implemented in the simulator now. For this, Unity, in combination with C# programming, shall be used. In the end a modular platform shall exist, which enables fast calibration of the system as well as easy usage and extendibility of the visual augmentation.

Goal:
Implementation of the Head Mounted Display “HoloLens 2” in the Rotorcraft Simulation Environment ROSIEX using Unity in Combination with C# (gRPC). A modular framework for further extension of the visual augmentation system shall be generated within this process.

Skills:
Good C# programming knowledge necessary, good Unity programming knowledge necessary, Augmented Reality knowledge is a plus

Tools: C#, Unity

Language: English, German is a plus

Start: March/April 2024
