HiWi position on the biochemistry and structural biology of proteins involved in ultra-rare neurodegenerative disorders
24.01.2025, Studentische Hilfskräfte, Praktikantenstellen, Studienarbeiten
Thesis opportunities for Bachelor's and Master's students in the structural biology of proteins associated with ultra-rare neurodegenerative disorders.
Locations: Bavarian NMR Center (TU, Garching) & Institute of Structural Biology (Helmholtz Munich, Neuherberg)
Supervisors: Dr. Ana Messias & Prof. Michael Sattler
Summary: We are looking for highly talented students with a strong background in biochemistry, chemistry, molecular biology or structural biology looking for a project where own groundbreaking ideas on challenging projects will be highly valued!
About the Project:
This exciting project will investigate the detailed molecular and functional mechanism of the proteins FA2H and C19or12 involved in ultra-rare NBIA neurodegenerative disorders FAHN and MPAN. The project aims to understand the basic molecular and cellular mechanisms of the proteins and ultimately to develop personalized drugs that will prolong and improve the lives of the patients. To achieve this, the student will use molecular biology, protein biochemistry, biophysical and biochemical methodologies, and structural biology techniques (NMR, X-ray, cryo-EM, SAXS/SANS, etc.).
Student profile:
Prospective candidates should have excellent qualifications (average grade better than 2.0) in biochemistry, biophysics or related, with chemical/biochemical knowledge. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in protein expression and purification, protein biochemistry, and/or structural biology methods including NMR, X-ray crystallography, and cryo-EM. The ideal candidate must be passionate about biochemistry, and structural biology, highly motivated, organized, independent and hard working. This is a project requiring to think out of the box ideal for students willing to work on an exciting breakthrough project.
