Two positions for doctoral students in the field of experimental polymer physics are available at the TUM School of Natural Sciences. Aim of project 1 is to investigate the nanostructures in thin films from pH-responsive block copolymers. Project 2 addresses the solution and gel structures of thermoresponsive quaterblock terpolymers. In both projects, scattering methods shall be used.
Group: The Soft Matter Physics Group at Technical University of Munich investigates complex polymer systems, e.g. nanostructured polymer film, responsive polymers, polymer gels and polymers for medical applications. For investigations of the structure, dynamics and kinetics of these systems, we mainly use scattering methods and do experiments at large facilities. Time-resolved scattering experiments allow us to monitor rapid structural changes. These experiments are complemented by laboratory methods, such as atomic force microscopy and light scattering.
Topics:
Research project 1 addresses the possibilities to control the morphologies formed by complex block copolymers that have pH-responsive, i.e. charged; blocks. Such films are of interest for nanolithography or the preparation of responsive ultrafilters. Altering the polymer architecture and the degree of charge gives unprecedented possibilities to tune the nanostructures in the film. Additional opportunities for structural control arise when the films are post-treated by solvent vapors. You are going to establish the film preparation and investigate the film morphologies using optical and atomic force microscopy, X-ray reflectometry and grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering.
Research project 2 explores the structures in block copolymers having four blocks, among them thermoresponsive, hydrophilic and hydrophobic ones. Such polymers are of interest for 3D bioprinting for tissue engineering. Tetrablock terpolymers offer a large number of possibilities for gel formation in aqueous environment. You are going to investigate the structures in dependence on polymer architecture using dynamic light scattering as well as small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering.
