About us
The Plasma-Material Interactions Chair at the TUM School of Engineering and Design focuses on researching materials for the first wall of fusion reactors.
The Technical University of Munich (TUM) participates with the Plasma-Material Interactions Chair in EUROfusion, a consortium funded by EURATOM to implement the research activities described in the Roadmap to Fusion during the term of the Horizon Europe research framework program.
The consortium maintains the Program Management Unit (PMU), an organizational unit responsible for program planning and program tracking.
Your profile:
• University degree in mechanical engineering or a related field.
• Many years of professional experience in mechanical design.
• At least 10 years of practical experience with CATIA V5.
• Experience in using data management programs to back up various system statuses.
• Several years of experience in fusion technology and in-depth knowledge of the components of the tokamak fusion concept.
• Proven experience in the development, design, and integration of the following tokamak systems and components:
- Neutral beam injection (NBI)
- Divertor design
- Vacuum vessel components
- Remote handling systems
- Design and layout of remote handling tools
- Blanket system
- Port plug design
- Tokamak building infrastructure
- Other in-vessel components
• Understanding of technical interrelationships and ability to translate design specifications into functional solutions.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team in an international environment.
• Very good written and spoken English skills.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills and a solution-oriented approach to work.
• Confident use of MS Office applications.
Your tasks
• Development of a test facility for the qualification of highly complex in-vessel components (Volumetric Neutron Source – VNS).
• Support in the development of technical concepts, design, production preparation, testing, and assembly of mechanical components and systems.
• Design of mechanical components for the DEMO fusion facility and associated plant systems, taking into account fusion-specific requirements – in close cooperation with physicists and systems engineers.
• Creation of 3D and 2D design models for the plasma vessel, its internal components, and plant systems for integration into the tokamak building.
• Production of CAD models with specific requirements as a basis for external reviews.
• Supporting the PMU team in documenting and presenting the VNS test facility and the DEMO tokamak systems, including technical descriptions and drawings.
• Presenting design and development results in English during regular (remote or in-person) meetings.
