TUM Spotlight: The IAS in Garching – Setting for Top Researchers
The TUM Institute for Advanced Study (TUM-IAS) on the Garching Campus is unique in Germany. Highly visible at Lichtenbergstraße 2a and located directly at the subway exit, it has its seat in a tastefully decorated, new building. BMW donated €10 million towards its construction.
"Fellows," i.e., top scientists from universities and research facilities as well as key managers of industry, can complete a lengthy research stay with the TUM-IAS. Together with TUM scientists, they pursue interdisciplinary projects in new, forward-looking areas of research.
During his/her Fellowship, the IAS participant can concentrate on research free from administrative and other burdens. The following facilities are available to Fellows: workstations, a faculty club on the top floor, and an additional lecture hall.
Currently, a total of 55 Fellows from 16 different countries work at the IAS: 30 guests and 25 TUM scientists. Of these, 7 come from industry and 14 are junior researchers. The TUM-IAS was founded in 2005 and has been funded since 2006 by the Excellence Initiative of the federal and state governments.
