Open Day at CoTeSys

Robotics research - live: who wouldn't welcome a helping hand to lay the breakfast table? Or a robot that can prepare pancakes? Researchers belonging to TUM's "Cognition for Technical Systems" (CoTeSys) cluster of excellence are working on just that kind of smart companion. They will be presenting the results of their latest research on Open Day, July 22nd 2011 between 12 noon and 5 p.m., venue: Karlstr. 45, 80333 Munich (U2 Königsplatz or No. 20 tram to the Karlstrasse stop). Construction competition „Mehrwasser“

More water from seawater! 15 teams of school pupils and students are tackling the global drinking water problem in this international construction competition by developing small, self-powered seawater desalination plants. The three winners will share prize money in excess of € 3,000. The contest is scheduled to take place on July 29th and 30th 2011 in front of the MI building on the Garching campus. A summer fête is on the evening agenda for July 29th and 30th the "Schlaue Füchse" TV team will be coming to the TUM DeSal kids' program with an interactive workshop on the topic of "water". Ideas competition GENERATION-D

What can we do to overcome Germany's current challenges? GENERATION-D, an interdisciplinary ideas competition thought up by students for students, is collecting creative ideas in three categories of "Work, Business and Environment", "Education and Culture" and "The Social Community". Teams of at least two students who are registered at a German university and are not older than 32 can take part. The ten best teams will be invited to Berlin in November. The three winners will receive prize money totalling € 15,000 and will present their concept at the "Führungstreffen Wirtschaft" organized by the Süddeutsche Zeitung, which brings together top managers from the German business world. European Space Elevator Challenge

European Space Elevator Challenge - EuSEC: EuSEC: The first European competition to devise a space elevator is to be held on the football pitch of TUM's Garching campus on August 20th and 21st 2011 Teams from countries as far afield as Iran, the USA, Japan, India, England and Macedonia have put their names down. The aim is to construct a space elevator cabin, otherwise known as a "climber", which will be able to move skywards along a rope or a cable. The model has to fulfil the core requirements of a real space elevator if it is to stand a chance of winning the prize money of more than € 5,000. The contest is open to the general public and has a lot to offer visitors, too. Everyone is invited to watch the ascent of the various structures and share in the excitement, get to know the different teams and join in the varied side program revolving around the space elevator. ROCK YOUR LIFE! Coaching for pupils from lower secondary schools

More education opportunities in Germany! It is with this goal in mind that ROCK YOUR LIFE! Munich started training students a year ago to accompany pupils from a lower secondary school and act as personal coach to one pupil each on a voluntary basis over a two-year period. The second group is due to start in October. We are looking for motivated students who would like to sign up as a coach or a member of the organisation team. The coaches receive professional training and regular support from RYL!. There are currently 30 coaches who are studying at TUM, LMU and FH. Taking Germany as a whole, there are more than 600 students from 15 campuses involved in the scheme. More... www.muenchen.rockyourlife.de

VDI-Preis 2011

Engineers from the south of Bavaria and Austria who have achieved outstanding academic performance are eligible to enter for the VDI prize 2011. Prizes are awarded in each of the following categories: Diploma thesis, Master's thesis, Bachelor's thesis, dissertation, engineering start-up and junior industrial engineer. The grade alone is not necessarily the determining factor. The winners will receive a valuable non-cash prize, and an announcement in the journal "Technik in Bayern" will ensure that the successful entrants are introduced to a wider public.
