Scientists Meet Scientists – TUM-IAS Wednesday Coffee Talk by Prof. Nikkil Sudharsanan: "Using behavioral science to improve cardiovascular disease prevention in middle-income countries"
Mittwoch 24.11.2021, 13:00 - 14:00
On November 24th, Rudolf Mößbauer Tenure Track Professor of Behavioral Science for Disease Prevention and Health Care Prof. Nikkil Sudharsanan will talk at our TUM-IAS Wednesday Coffee Talk.
Title: "Using behavioral science to improve cardiovascular disease prevention in middle-income countries"
Abstract:
Improving hypertension and diabetes control has the potential to prevent a substantial number of early deaths in middle-income countries. Achieving this potential, however, is not a biomedical but rather a behavioral and implementation challenge. Improving prevention will require clinicians to change how they provide care and individuals to change how they seek care and take actions to maintain their health. In my talk, I will present evidence from studies in India, Indonesia, Cambodia, and South Africa that highlight the behavioral challenges to improving cardiovascular disease prevention. Drawing on insights from the behavioral sciences, I will then outline the intervention studies my group and I are developing to try and address these behavioral bottlenecks.
Before coming to TUM, Prof. Sudharsanan was an Alexander von Humboldt Postdoctoral Fellow at the Heidelberg Institute of Global Health and a David E. Bell Postdoctoral Fellow at the Harvard Center for Population and Development Studies. He received his PhD in Population Studies and MS in Statistics from the University of Pennsylvania.
