Venue:

Speaker
Prof. Shobhana Narasimhan, Department of Theoretical Sciences at the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research

On July 7th, Anna Boyksen Fellow Shobhana Narasimhan, Professor of Theoretical Sciences at the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research in Bangalore, India will give a talk:

"Why are women a minority in the scientific workforce, and what can we do about it?"

Prof. Narasimhan obtained her Master in Physcis from The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay), where she was the Institute Silver Medallist, and her PhD (Physics) from Harvard University. She did postdoctoral work at Brookhaven National Laboratory, USA, and the Fritz Haber Institut, Berlin, Germany.

She is considered a leader in the field of using quantum mechanical density functional theory to design novel nanomaterials having made many important contributions. She is particularly known for her work explaining the famous herringbone reconstruction of the gold (111) surface, her demonstration of how to calculate the thermal properties of metals, and her suggestion that the morphology and catalytic activity of metal nanoparticles can be tuned by doping the support that they are deposited on with an electron donor. She has also been a leader in physics in promoting science in the developing world, fostering gender equity in science, and science communication.

Since 2020, Prof. Narasimhan is an Anna Boyksen Fellow at TUM-IAS. The focus group “Building Bridges to Promote Gender Inclusivity in Science” consists of Prof. Narasimhan and her hosts Prof. Johannes Barth (TUM Department of Physics) and Dr. Eva Sandmann (TUM Gender Equality Office).
