With its new Speaker Series, the TUM Institute for Ethics in Artificial Intelligence is bringing experts from all over the world to Munich to talk about Ethics and Governance of AI. These events serve as an important platform for sharing new research and exchanging knowledge.

The inaugural session of the TUM IEAI Speaker Series will take place on 13 December 2019, 10am, at the Hochschule für Politik in Richard Wagner Straße 1, Munich. The topic for this first session will be “Designing Fair Artificial Intelligence for Managing Employees: A Review, Critique, and Design Agenda”. Organizations are rapidly employing artificial intelligence (AI) systems to manage their workers. However, AI systems have been found at times to be unfair to workers. Unfairness toward workers has been associated with decreased worker effort and increased worker turnover. To avoid such problems, AI systems must be designed to support fairness and redress instances of unfairness. Despite the attention related to AI unfairness, there has not been a theoretical and systematic approach to developing a design agenda. This paper addresses this issue in three ways. First, we present the organizational justice theory as a framework of fairness. Second, we review the scant design literature on AI fairness in organizations. Finally, we introduce a framework to guide our design research agenda for fairer AI systems in organizations. We are pleased to announce that the speaker of this first event is Lionel P. Robert Jr. of the University of Michigan. Lionel P. Robert Jr. is an Associate Professor in the School of Information (UMSI) at the University of Michigan. He is a former BAT Fellow and KPMG Scholar. Lionel is the current director of the Michigan Autonomous Vehicle Research Intergroup Collaboration (MAVRIC) and an affiliate of the University of Michigan Robotics Institute, the National Center for Institutional Diversity and the Center for Hybrid Intelligence Systems all at the University of Michigan and the Center for Computer-Mediated Communication at Indiana University. Dr. Robert has published in journals such as Information Systems Research, Journal of the Association of Information Systems and the Journal of the Association of Information Science and Technology as well as top HCI conferences such as CHI, CSCW, HRI, WSDM and ICWSM. His research has been sponsored by the U.S. Army, Toyota Research Institute, MCity, Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies and the National Science Foundation. He has appeared in print, radio and/or television for such outlets as ABC, CNN, CNBC, Michigan Radio, Inc., Washington Examiner, Detroit News and the Associated Press. Prior registration is appreciated, please use the form on our website to register for the event.
