ProLehre Workshop: Teaching in English
With the increasing use of English as the medium of instruction (EMI) at German universities, lecturers are facing the challenge of having to teach in a language other than their own.
The purpose of this seminar is to practice some specific language skills necessary for effective teaching in English at the university level. We will begin with some initial theoretical considerations on university instruction today and a self-assessment and diagnostic brief. We will then concentrate on some of the most common errors and stumbling blocks faced by German native speakers in English. Our topics will include grammatical accuracy, the use of oral rhetorical devices, listening comprehension, the ability to paraphrase, and clear and correct vocal delivery. Finally, as teachers in the international classroom, we will briefly address the issue of cultural diversity and review techniques for incorporating international students into the classroom.
Objectives
After attending this workshop, participants are able to
• evaluate current pedagogical tendencies and analyze the challenges of teaching in English,
• incorporate and self-monitor effective language skills for teaching in English,
• incorporate culturally-aware pedagogy in the international classroom.
Methodology
• class discussion
• group work and pair work
• impromptu talks
• practice exercises
