The Institute for Advanced Study of Technische Universität München (TUM-IAS) is part of TUM’s institutional strategy to promote top-level research in the so-called Excellence Initiative by the German federal and state governments. TUM-IAS awards Fellowships to distinguished researchers and gives them the necessary time and financial support to explore new venues, to develop novel research areas and to establish intensive international collaborations.

HANS FISCHER SENIOR FELLOWSHIP,

HANS FISCHER FELLOWSHIP and

RUDOLF DIESEL INDUSTRY FELLOWSHIP.

HANS FISCHER SENIOR FELLOWSHIP

Target Group: Up to six Hans Fischer Senior Fellowships will be awarded to outstanding international scientists who intend to explore innovative, high-risk topics in their scientific research areas together with a TUM Research Group. Applications are invited in all areas of the TUM research portfolio.

Objective: The Fellowships last three years with the expectation that the Fellow will spent a total of at least nine months at TUM. In this way, TUM-IAS intends to further a lasting and productive connection on an international level.

Funding: Hans Fischer Senior Fellows receive an award of €60,000 plus €50,000 for travel, housing and research related costs, and support for one doctoral candidate at TUM.

Conditions: Hans Fischer Senior Fellows have to fulfill the mobility requirements of the Marie Curie COFUND program within EU's 7th Framework Program which co-funds the Fellowship, i.e., no more than 12 months employment in Germany in the three years preceding the publication date of the respective call.

The nominee and the planned TUM-IAS Host should submit a joint application including the following documents

  • nomination letter including the facilities provided for the Fellow by the TUM Host institute,
  • CV including a list of major publications (please highlight the 3-5 most important publications of the past 5 years),
  • statement of purpose jointly signed by the candidate and the hosting professor, describing how the Fellowship would contribute to the innovation of the scientific or technological environment at TUM, the specific goals to be achieved, a budget plan and a time plan regarding the candidate’s projected periods of stay at TUM,
  • letter of nomination from the Dean of the hosting faculty or another member of the TUM Extended Board of Management (EHP) or TUM-IAS Board of Trustees.

HANS FISCHER FELLOWSHIP

Target Group: Up to three Hans Fischer Fellowships will be awarded to outstanding early-career international scientists, who intend to explore innovative, high-risk topics in their scientific research areas together with a TUM Research Group. Applications are invited in all areas of the TUM research portfolio.

Objective: The Fellowships last three years with the expectation that the Fellow will spent a total of at least nine months at TUM. In this way, TUM-IAS intends to further a lasting and productive connection on an international level.

Funding: Hans Fischer Fellows receive an award of €30,000 plus €50,000 for travel, housing and research related costs, as well as support for one doctoral candidate at TUM.

Conditions:

  • Hans Fischer Fellows have to fulfill the mobility requirements of the Marie Curie COFUND program within EU's 7th Framework Program which co-funds the Fellowship, i.e., no more than 12 months employment in Germany in the three years preceding the publication date of the respective call.
  • Proposed Fellows have to have completed their doctorate within the last 12 years (allowance can be made for special circumstances like parental leave).
  • Proposed Fellows have to provide evidence of employment at their home institute for the duration of the Fellowship.

The nominee and the planned TUM-IAS Host should submit a joint application including the following documents:

  • nomination letter including the facilities provided for the Fellow by the TUM Host institute,
  • CV including a list of major publications (please highlight the 3-5 most important publications),
  • statement of purpose jointly signed by the candidate and the hosting professor, describing how the Fellowship would contribute to the innovation of the scientific or technological environment at TUM, the specific goals to be achieved, a budget plan and a time plan regarding the candidate’s projected periods of stay at TUM,
  • letter of nomination from the Dean of the hosting faculty or another member of the TUM Extended Board of Management (EHP) or TUM-IAS Board of Trustees.

RUDOLF DIESEL INDUSTRY FELLOWSHIP

Target Group: Up to four Rudolf Diesel Industry Fellowships will be awarded to outstanding international researchers from the industry with a strong connection to TUM Research Groups. Applications are invited in all areas of the TUM research portfolio.

Objective: The Fellowships last three years in which the Fellows are expected to develop an intensive collaboration with their hosting Focus Group. Throughout the affiliation period, the Rudolf Diesel Industry Fellow may offer special courses and lectures in their field of expertise to enhance the connection between the university and industry.

Funding: The Fellow receives a research fund for travel, accommodation and research related costs depending on the length of his/her actual stay at TUM (up to €10,000 per month).

Conditions:

  • TUM-IAS expects the company of the Rudolf Diesel Industry Fellow to support the connection of their researcher to academia by continuing to pay their salary.
  • Rudolf Diesel Industry Fellows have to fulfill the mobility requirements of the Marie Curie COFUND program within EU's 7th Framework Program which co-funds the Fellowship, i.e., no more than 12 months employment in Germany in the three years preceding the publication date of the respective call.

The nominee and the planned TUM-IAS Host should submit a joint application including the following documents:

  • nomination letter including the facilities provided for the Fellow by the TUM Host institute,
  • CV including a list of major publications,
  • statement of purpose jointly signed by the candidate and the hosting professor, describing the content of the joint research, its innovative potential and the concrete implementation plans (time and budget), including any planned events to enhance the Institute’s intellectual environment,
  • letter of nomination from the Dean of the hosting faculty or another member of the TUM Extended Board of Management (EHP) or TUM-IAS Board of Trustees.
