Newton's revolutionary idea was to examine mathematically expressed physical laws (e.g. Kepler's laws) by mathematics and so reach deep insight into physics. This is the basis of modern attempts at modeling. Our example will show that once a research problem has been 'mathematized' further research should be by strict mathematics. In our case, a faint allergy to mathematics and falling back on 'physical intuition' retarded progress for some 70 years.
