6th Helmholtz Diabetes Conference
The meeting brings together international top leaders in the field of diabetes to enable the identification of, and potential solutions to, the preeminent scientific challenges facing the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes. For this 6th conference, the main focus will be on the role of the brain in metabolic control. Moreover the conference will feature two award presentations: the Helmholtz Diabetes Lecture, in recognition of the lifetime achievements of a senior leader in the field, and the Helmholtz Young Investigator in Diabetes Award (HeIDi), in recognition of a rising star. Every year, this conference series integrates research reports on essential scientific questions in urgent need of a breakthrough. In 2018, we will focus on the role of the brain in metabolic control uncovering the cell type diversity and functional heterogeneity of hypothalamic regulatory circuits to allow dissecting, targeting and improving the CNS control of metabolism. This years conference will be hosted by Matthias Tschöp, Helmholtz Zentrum München & Technische Universität München/ TUM and Jens Brüning, Max Planck Institute Cologne. Knowledge and Competence Spaces: Basics, Extensions, Challenges --- and their Potential for Large Scale Assessments
Knowledge Space Theory (KST) and its Competence-based extensions (CbKST) are prominent examples on how an adaptation strategy for guidance in assessment and learning are grounded on a theoretical framework and can be applied in e-assessment and e-learning systems. KST and CbKST constitute sound formal frameworks for both structuring knowledge domains as well as for representing the knowledge and the competences of learners in detail. They are the basis for personalised assessment and individualised teaching. The development of this approach will be mentioned and illustrated by several applications, e.g. in terms of adaptive assessment and scaffolding. In it’s second part the talk will focus on two recent integrative developments, which have been performed within European R&D-projects and might be challenging for Large Scale Assessments (LSA): (a) Integrating Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) and Adaptive e-Learning Systems on the one hand and (b) creating Microadaptivity for e.g. Game-Based Learning (GBL) on the other hand. CbKST and SRL are rather contradictory, nevertheless they can be combined to a uniform and new approach taking advantage of each side. Microadaptivity in its current form combines Competence Structures (from CbKST) with Problem Spaces (from Information-Processing Theory of Human Problem Solving) for the purpose of non-invasive, process-oriented skill assessment, skill activation, skill acquisition, and motivation. The third part of the talk will summarise and reflect on challenges for LSA and Computerised Adaptive Testing (CAT) in face of current and future developments like Open Learning Environments, MOOCs, Cultural Diversity in Learning and Teaching, Inquiry-based Learning etc.

Advancing Analysis of Biological Complexes and Vesicles using Open-Channel Separation
Open-channel separation techniques, such as asymmetrical flow-field flow fractionation (AF4) and capillary electrophoresis (CE), can better preserve the fragile structures of biological complexes and accommodate much higher molecular weight analytes than conventional chromatography. Thus, my group has been applying AF4 and CE to analyze biological complexes. We have proved that AF4 can effectively separate the unbound and target-bound ssDNA during Systematic Evolution of Ligands by EXponential Enrichment (SELEX). This has led to the discovery of aptamers with high binding affinity and high efficacy in inhibiting target enzyme function through displacement of the natural ligand. We have also successfully coupled AF4 offline with CE to help obtain extracellular vesicles (EVs) free of contamination of matrix proteins, so that highly confident identification of the EV-specific protein cargos can be achieved. Both applications well demonstrate the power of open-channel separation techniques in rapid processing of biological complexes to permit downstream analysis of the involved molecular interactions.

Women, Business and the Law 2024: Breaking Barriers to Achieve Gender Equality
Women worldwide face significantly more barriers to becoming entrepreneurs or employees compared to men. The latest Women, Business, and the Law report offers a comprehensive picture of the obstacles that women face in entering the global workforce and contributing to greater prosperity – for themselves, their families, and their communities. It expands the scope of its analysis, adding two indicators that can be critical in opening up or restricting women’s options: safety from violence and access to childcare services. When those measures are included, women on average enjoy just 64% of the legal protections that men do – far fewer than the previous estimate of 77%. Women, Business and the Law is a World Bank Group project collecting data on the laws and policy mechanisms that measure the enabling environment for women’s economic opportunity. Women, Business and the Law 2024 introduces a new framework with three pillars – legal frameworks, supportive frameworks, and expert opinions – to measure the differences on access to economic opportunities between men and women in 190 economies. Adopting laws that strengthen women’s rights and opportunities is an essential first step toward inclusive, resilient, stronger societies. Equal treatment of women under the law is associated with more women entering and remaining in the labor force and rising to managerial positions. It generates higher wages for women and facilitates business ownership by women. The analysis reveals a shocking implementation gap. Although laws on the books imply that women enjoy roughly two-thirds the rights of men, countries on average have established less than 40% of the systems needed for full implementation. For example, 98 economies have enacted legislation mandating equal pay for women for work of equal value. Yet only 35 economies – fewer than one out of every five – have adopted pay-transparency measures or enforcement mechanisms to address the pay gap. Even in high-income countries with high scores for treating women equally under the law, the implementation of these laws is lacking.

Metropolis Nonformal – Anticipation Launching the UN-Habitat Hub on Informal Urbanism
Informal urbanism is one of the dominant forces driving urban growth in cities in the developing world. During the last half-century a range of interventions were developed to improve the living conditions of existing informal neighborhoods. Less clear, however, are viable strategies for the additional projected two billion ‘slum’ dwellers by 2050. Policy makers mostly focus on the infrastructural deficiencies and illegal status of informal urbanization. In contrast, Metropolis Nonformal – Anticipation operates under the realization that self-construction is in many countries the only viable urbanization model for low-income migrants. Metropolis Nonformal – Anticipation insists that cities must shift from a negative attitude of prevention to a more positive attitude of anticipation and assistance to growing numbers of informal settlers. The symposium will explore anticipatory strategies that actively integrate the entrepreneurial capacity and intelligence of low-income migrants in the production of future urban growth. Are there alternative land ownership and land allocation models that can provide buildable sites? What is the urban form and framework of managed self-construction? How does one communicate with urban migrants in waiting, in transition or recently arrived? Can self-built holistic and resourceful infrastructures be deployed to foster water management, close food-waste cycles, provide building material, offer transport solutions, mitigate unsafe sites and ultimately generate income and jobs? Metropolis Nonformal will serve as the launching event of a new ‘Hub on Informal Urbanism’ as part of the Habitat Partner University Initiative (HPUI).

Energetische Sanierung - gut gestaltet
