Space telescopes, not affected by the blurring and absorption of Earth's atmosphere, have been key drivers of progress for modern astronomy. While space observations are carried out over the whole electromagnetic spectrum, imaging at infrared wavelengths, which is critically needed for a wide range of investigations, is one of the areas where the gain compared to ground is maximal. Orbiting telescopes, large or small, have been so far confined to complex missions run by government agencies. However, thanks to dramatic technological improvements, CubeSats represent a new opportunity to break the price and performance curve of traditional space missions, while retaining attractiveness as cutting-edge research platforms. This presentation will describe the SkyHopper project, the first CubeSat with a near-infrared telescope. The prime scientific goals are the discovery of potentially habitable Earth-size exoplanets transiting in front of nearby cool stars, and the identification of high-redshift Gamma Ray Bursts (GRB) afterglows. Nachdem Herr Dr. Greiner sein Physikstudium an der Universität Leipzig abgeschlossen hatte, begann er bereits seine Tätigkeiten im Raumfahrtsektor am Institute for Space Research in Berlin. Dort beschäftigte er sich mit kosmischer Strahlung und schloss seine Promotion im Jahr 1988 erfolgreich ab. Im Anschluss wechselte er vorerst zum Max-Planck-Institut für extraterrestrische Physik in Garching. Von 1997 – 2001 war Dr. Greiner am Astrophysical Institute of Potsdam tätig, bevor an der TU München habilitierte. Seit 2005 ist er wieder am MPE im Bereich der Hochenergie Astrophysik beschäftigt.

With demographic change, an increasing number of people is excluded from driving due to physical or cognitive limitations. While impairments like visual deficits can have a great impact on driving safety and performance, the development of automated vehicles offers the potential of including such non-drivers in road traffic in the future. With an international composition of renowned scientists, this weekly webinar sheds light on manual and automated driving for visually impaired users in front of the background of psychology, ophthalmology, computer science and sociology. Protective artificial ventilation has been identified as one of the most important research fields, which demands an interdisciplinary approach. For patients suffering from Acute Lung Injury (ALI) or Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) artificial ventilation is a mandatory treatment. Unfortunately the ventilation also causes life threatening side effects. The goal of this priority program “protective artificial ventilation” is to develop new individually tailored ventilation strategies, based on the understanding of the underlying mechanics and medical procedures. For this challenging task a cooperation of competent research groups with engineering as well as medical backgrounds is essential. In particular, the former group brings extensive expertise on the computational and experimental mechanics side whilst the latter brings expertise covering imaging, physiology, anesthesia and intensive care medicine. Within this interdisciplinary project there are some basic project aims: “Basic principals and diagnostic”, “biomedical consequences” and "protective artificial ventilation".
