The project: Hematopoiesis is a tightly regulated complex process, resulting in the production of billions of new blood cells each day. Dysregulation of this process leads to severe diseases, including leukemia. For the main part, hematopoiesis takes place in the bone marrow microenvironment. The present project is situated on the exciting interface between molecular cell biology and bioinformatics. We aim to combine cocultures of stem cells and microenvironment cells with microarray analyses of gene expression. The changes in gene expression over time in both HSC and stromal cells will be analyzed. This complex of data will be used to develop a searchable database and propose a bioinformatic model of stem cell regulation and dysregulation, to allow predictions of stem cell behaviour under different circumstances. Your job: The Ph.D. student will work in and the 3rd Department of Internal Medicine (Klinikum rechts der Isar, TU Munich, Project leader: Prof. C. Peschel) and the Helmholtz Institute of Bioinformatics and Systems Biology (Neuherberg, Project leader: Prof. H.W. Mewes). The candidate will perform detailed analyses of the regulation of blood-forming stem cells in contact with regulating microenviroenmental cells, develop comprehensive databases, establish interaction models. In addition, studies of possible regulatory pathways identified will be performed in cell culture as well as transplantation experiments. Your profile: The successful candidate should have a strong multidisciplinary interest in the areas of cell biology and bioinformatics. Previous experience with cell biological techniques, genome analysis, programming and/or database skills are advantageous but not required. Our offer: The candidate will work on a cutting-edge project together with an interdisciplinary team of physicians and computer specialists. We will actively assist the candidate in achieving a Ph.D. degree within the scheduled time of three years. Description In cardiology and cardiac surgery several foldable devices are used e.g. for the implantation of heart valves or the closure of orifices and defects in the heart. The aim of this project is to improve the planning and the stability of the optimal patient individual implant position on the basis of preoperative image data. In a first step the relevant anatomical structures should be identified in the image data. By simulating the device structure and its deformation properties the robust insertion of the devices should be improved and the optimal position of deployment should be defined. This will require good programming, image processing and materials understanding. You will be collaborating with a team of experienced scientists and engineers from the MiMed Institute (Prof. Lüth) at TUM and the Micro Structures Integration group at GE. You will have unique access to the latest rapid prototyping hardware, as well as an extensive internal and external network of collaborating sites.
