Die monumentalen Buddhas von Bamiyan leuchteten früher in kräftigen Farben. Restauratoren der Technischen Universität München (TUM) haben hunderte Fragmente der von den Taliban gesprengten Statuen analysiert. Sie haben den Zeitraum der Entstehung erstmals verlässlich datiert und die technisch brillante Bauweise erforscht. Ein Verfahren, das sie gemeinsam mit der Firma eines TUM-Absolventen entwickelt haben, könnte das poröse Gestein festigen und einen Wiederaufbau des antiken Weltkulturerbes ermöglichen.

Your research and responsibilities: In plants, patterning by cell division relies on division plane establishment, on the biogenesis of a membrane compartment called the cell plate, and on cell plate insertion at the division site. The processes of cell plate guidance and insertion are poorly understood. Lipids are increasingly recognized as important membrane landmarks, but whether specific lipids mark the division site has yet to be investigated. Your activities will address the following questions: i) how are lipids sorted at the expanding cell plate or division site? ii) does lipid sorting require a Rab Guanine nucleotide Exchange Factor? iii) conversely, do lipid landmarks regulate Guanine nucleotide Exchange Factor function? Your results will considerably further our understanding of the establishment, recognition and function of membrane micro-domains. This is a collaborative, interdisciplinary project. In cutting-edge facilities, the project spans a broad range techniques: lipid biosensors, lipid click-chemistry, inducible depletion of lipids by optogenetics, super-resolution microscopy, targeted immuno-isolation of membrane complexes, proteomics and lipidomics.

Two Research/PhD Positions at the Institute for Ethics in Artificial Intelligence The Institute for Ethics in Artificial Intelligence (IEAI) conducts inter-, multi-, and transdisciplinary research that promotes active collaboration between the technical, engineering and social sciences, while also actively courting interaction with a wide group of international stakeholders from academia, industry and civil society. This exhaustive approach enables the IEAI to truly and comprehensively address a growing group of ethical challenges arising at the interface of technology and human values. It also aids in the development of thoroughly operational ethical frameworks in the field of AI. The IEAI follows TUM’s strategy for “Human-Centered Engineering” and the university’s bold creation of the Munich Center for Technology in Society (MCTS) in 2012, whose mission is to better understand and reflexively shape the multiple interactions between science, technology and society. We are seeking interested, driven candidates, who are enthusiastic about interdisciplinary research in ethics in artificial intelligence, to work on two exciting new research topics. The successful candidates will be employed by TUM on a fixed-term 50% contract initially for 1 year (E13 TV-L). You will be a part of the IEAI researcher team and work with other team members, also across departments, to carry out the research, produce project reports, present your research in conferences, and publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals. You will also be asked to carry out tasks related to the IEAI and our activities as needed. Successful applicants would also enroll as doctoral candidates under Prof. Christoph Lütge in the TUM School of Governance or the TUM School of Management. We are seeking one researcher for each of the following projects: The IEAI will be carrying out a 1-year research project with TUM Strategic Partners and Global AI Ethic Consortium (GAIEC) members at the University of Tokyo on the ethics of the use of AI-enabled technologies employed to monitor, respond to and manage individuals and populations deemed at risk. The research will examine ethics of the use of AI in smart city technologies employed during crises as part of the IEAI research agenda on ethics and the use of AI to manage pandemics and health-related crisis. COVID-19 has hit metropolitan areas in intense waves, straining public service capacity and creating logistically complicated situations for social distancing. AI-enabled smart city technologies, such as those related to transport, finance, medicine, education and communication have a potential role to play in managing capacity, dealing with coordination issues and improving communication between the public and the government. However, what are the ethical concerns related to using these technologies in crises scenarios and how do we educate the public and policymakers on the precautions they should taken when implementing these tools? The IEAI will be carrying out a 1-year research project with TUM Strategic Partners and Global AI Ethic Consortium (GAIEC) members at Imperial College London on the ethics of the use of AI-enabled technologies employed to monitor, respond to and manage individuals and populations deemed at risk. The research will examine ethics of the use of AI in adaptive data driven health surveillance as part of the IEAI research agenda on ethics and the use of AI to manage pandemics and health-related crisis. Personal health surveillance is the continuous monitoring of health (e.g. physiological) and behavioral signals for health purposes. Today it is being advanced to allow governments to monitor the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic and “flatten the curve”. When AI is used in data driven health surveillance, it can have many ethical, psychological and social consequences that its designers also need to consider. Issues related to bias and fairness in AI algorithms also create challenges in terms of the effectiveness of the AI system, but also its perceived trustworthiness and uptake by potential users. This project will explore these issues asking: How can and should biomedical and AI ethics principles be considered in the development of classification algorithms that track behaviors and detect possible health risks? And how can and should we model fairness and justice into the development of health surveillance tools? Requirements: Master’s degree in ethics and technology, computer science, governance/public policy or other related field with excellent grade Competence in English for research/academic settings. Ability to work independently and in a structured manner and also together with an interdisciplinary team Strong and documented interest or experience in AI ethics and responsible AI, broadly.
